    Sincerely, Vangie

  17. Well, actually, AmericanLola, I did not list mine because I wanted to observe what this program does. Mine also started out with Evangeline. Then I tried my full maiden name, it still came out with Evangeline. I used my nickname and maiden last name, same result: Evangeline. Any combination I tried came out with the same result. It’s either it’s got artificial intelligence to know it’s the same person or it’s pegging it to something else…

So I started to wonder if it’s pegging it to an IP address maybe, after making a best guess of the gender?

Folks, don’t take me too seriously here… I am just one of those weird folks, I like to observe patterns and see what I can deduce out of it. When I get home again tonight, I’ll try it again. Right now I’m at a midway stop and doing some work of my own while having some fun to keep my creative juice flowing…

What an addictive blog and fun thread! I got to get on a 12-step program shortly if I get too hooked on this blog.

  18. Here is mine, based on the name that I will be changing to, in the next few months. Am I not lucky that I have a few options?
    Evangeline Rose Sunshine Castillote

  19. So, was it different from a differen IP address? Now I am curious. Rose Sunshine, nice!

  20. Hi AmericanLola,

Yes, it was from a different IP because I did the above again after I got home last night. I finally gave up how they assign names! Am just glad that I got a beautiful sounding name. But wait, I’m already Filipino!!
Of course Sunshine was a delightful (though amazing) coincidence as you probably know why.

  21. Hmm, what exactly does this have to do with living in the Philippines? useful information? I get torn up and chased off the blog for posting humour. Just an observation. :???:

  22. Hi Louis,

Although not too obvious, I think AmericanLola’s point here is getting to know the light, the mundane, yet a very real aspect of Filipino culture. American Lola can correct me and tell me to be quiet if this is not so… :-)
Of course one’s name is not mundane, that’s not what I’m trying to say. However if you have lived in the Philippines long enough, have you noticed how many grown-up women are “Baby’s”? And how many grown up men are “Boys”? You might have heard of adults being called “Ate Baby” or “Kuya Boy” or “Tita Baby” or “Tito Boy” — at least in the Tagalog speaking regions.

And have you heard of nicknames like Bongbong, Tingting, Kring Kring, Ning Ning and whatever? That is so uniquely Filipino and is so much part of the culture. The late president Marcos had a son nicknamed Bongbong.

I think that was the intent of this lighter blog — “Filipinoize” us by giving us “new” names.

So yes, it’s related to “Living in the Philippines” — if taken in that context, even if it’s just to humor us.

  23. Yes, Louis, Angie has it right. It is for fun, but it is also for those of us who have always sort of envied grand Filipino names and their fun/creative nicknames. As Vangie, I just sort of blend in… :-)
    Thanks, Angie!

  24. Hello American Lola…Bill Huff here……………i think this is great….My new name will be …Bayari Rodel Pulo Gaffud, starting on Sept.21st…..now i just have to learn how to pronounce it…hehehehehe….thank you for the fun post, and i beleave it deserves to be in this Blog…..

  25. Hi Lola- My new name is Kuripot Jim but I think I have heard me being refered to as that before.

  26. Hi Jim - I didn’t know that the website would recycle names like that - it called me Kuripot Bob! :-) Just kidding….

  27. Actually you both missed my point. To explain I posted “You may be married to a filipina and live in the Philippines if” blog when I was an associate blogger here. I was ripped a new labot by the community because I was “Making fun of Filipinos”. Now this quite obviously makes fun of filipino names and everyone is enjoying a grand laugh. Nice to know the double standard works over here too.

  28. I’m sorry if I missed your point, but I don’t find this post “making fun of Filipinos”. What made you think that ? Because Filipino names sound “funny”, not your usual American-sounding names? Sorry, Louis, I totally missed your drift. No further comments.

  29. Louis - your post was condescending toward Filipino habits and ways. This post is in no way condescending toward Filipinos. I have no way of knowing, but I would guess that the website that AmericanLola pointed to is probably a website owned and operated by a Filipino. While some Filipino names are funny to us who are not used to them, the names that are generated by the site don’t seem to be - no “Ding Dong” “Bing Bong” or whatever.

On your original comment here you said that you were “chased off the blog,” which is nowhere near the truth. You wrote me an e-mail and asked me to remove you. I make posts where people disagree with me and such, but I don’t consider disagreeing with what I say as “chasing me away.” To me, if I get a big chorus of people telling me that I am wrong, I tend to take a look at what I said and re-consider. Sometimes I see that indeed I was wrong in what I said. At other times I feel that I was right, and I hold on to my opinion.

I don’t believe that there are any double standards here. You were treated fairly here. If you had been “chased off” you would not be able to even leave a comment here anymore.

  30. No, Louis, I did not miss your point. I chose to ignore it because your ’sour grapes’ comment made you look bad, and I didn’t want to draw attention to it. I answered it as if you had asked a good question about why I posted a link to the fun site I had found.

“It is for fun, but it is also for those of us who have always sort of envied grand Filipino names and their fun/creative nicknames. As Vangie, I just sort of blend in…”

Others also did not take you up on your challenge.

I also knew that you left off writing for this blog of your own accord, but I didn’t mention that either. I guess it is pretty hard to save you from yourself.

I did get the link from a site run by Filipinos, and I do not feel it is in any way disrespectful, any more than similar sites giving people a ‘Jedi Knight’ name is disrespectful of George Lucas.

  31. Nicely put, AmericanLola! Spot on!

  32. Hello American Lola…Bill Huff here…..Well, i must say, i am “BLOWN AWAY” about the remarks that Louis made here. I am not as polite as the rest of you, and to be honest, i did not like the very first post that Louis wrote here to begain with…..he did not fit, period !…..he was NOT in anyway “CHASED” from this blog, but in my opion, he should have !!!
I am sorry, but i must be the idiot here, i REALLY thought the new names were real…..heheheh….i took it serious, i have even told some of my friends my Phili name, and have ALWAYS thought the sound of the Phili names Beautiful…..almost Poitic in nature. I was PROUD to think that i really could have this Phili name…???….
Anyway, it seemd to me that Louis has just been lurking in the back-drop of cyber-space, just waiting for something to pop-up to do just what he did here….but after reading his previouse post, i guess this should not really surprise me……???????….Bayarri Rodel Pule Gaffud….now tell me my Friends…does’nt this have a much more BEAUTIFUL flow to it than Bill Huff…????…

  33. Ah, Bill (Bayari, I mean), I am sorry to have burst your bubble! It is a ‘name generator’ just for fun, but who says you can’t enjoy that dignified Filipino name you got from it? It is indeed a grand name! Go ahead, practice writing and saying it, but I would not advise signing checks with it! :-)
Let’s not be too hard on Louis. I feel sorry for him. He just keeps shooting himself in the foot. It sounds like he has a very nice wife whom he loves and who loves him back, a nice extended family to be a part of, and a good living situation, and I am really glad he has that. I hope that as time goes by these moderating influences will help him be a little more humble and a bit less prickly. He could have edited that offensive post and everyone would have commended him…

  34. Yep I love my wife and she loves me, I also enjoy the company of my extended family and friends here, mostly because everyone save 1 person of my friends and all my family stopped talking to me when I made the decision to come over here. So I have been adopted and I am closer to my in-laws than I ever was with my family. Ok for my part, wrong choice of words, I was not “chased” from the board I chose to leave of my own accord. Maybe I do shoot myself in the foot sometimes, I play the role of the joker because I have lived through things in my life the rest of you could never dream of. AmericanLola I apologize for the comment and the thread drift. I should have just kept my mouth shut because I am an outsider, and my comments here mean I will never be a part of this community I’ve made too many people dislike me.

  35. Apology accepted freely, Louis! I don’t think you need to remain an outsider. You have had some good and helpful things to say in some of your comments. I think we have all shot ourselves in the foot at one time or other. In our humanity, we tend to think that if we back down or admit we are wrong, or blew it, people will lose respect for us, but the opposite is actually true. It takes courage to own up to a mistake, hasty words or a wrong perception, but the end result is that the people who were offended will admire your courage and humility. Humility is a positive trait that works against false pride and touchiness- something we all need!
Anyway, thanks for this comment! I like you better already, and I bet I am not the only one. :-)

  36. Bill Huff here…..i am not really sorry about my reaction to Louis’s post, but i must say, i do agree with you American Lola in your last responce to Louis……i must say, i would have no foot at all if everytime i shot myself in it was with real bullets……and Louis, i really do not feel it is a dislike that the people here on this blog have towards you. Nothing you have said or done really justifies that…..you just have a way of treekin’ us at times, so hang in there….

  37. Louis,

“I should have just kept my mouth shut because I am an outsider, and my comments here mean I will never be a part of this community I’ve made too many people dislike me.”

You are a part of this community more than some of us are. I remember your wedding picture, you even had Bob at your wedding! Wasn’t he your ninong? Most of us can only imagine what Bob might be like in person but you know him. You’ve met him. Doesn’t that count for a lot already?

I don’t think you’ve ever been ‘disowned’ by LiPers. Like a big family, there will be spats, occasionally, over a “dinner conversation” gone bad. But believe me, you are not an outsider and will never be. Unless, you, yourself, decide to feel that way… for whatever reason…

So come on, Louis Tamisi, get back in the ring and enjoy. (You’re probably surprised I remember your last name, too.)

  38. Hi Bill Huff,

“Bayarri Rodel Pule Gaffud….now tell me my Friends…does’nt this have a much more BEAUTIFUL flow to it than Bill Huff…????…”

Both names are beautiful and rightly so. Bayarri Rodel sounds exotic and has a poetic ring to it, it seems to mirror the exciting, magical journey you are about to begin. Bill Huff has a legendary ring to it, like a name I expect to read in an American history book. No kidding. Probably because it sounds so American? LOL.

Anyway Bayarri Rodel (there you go), we’re on this blog not only to learn but have fun along the way. So if you enjoy your new Filipino name, why not start signing off with it on this blog? It’s a way to enjoy your “new identity.” Just remind us you are Bayarri Rodel, aka Bill Huff, ‘coz some folks who have not read this thread might not recognize you.

And as AmericanLola said, just don’t sign your checks with it… Everything will just be fine and dandy. And fun, too.

All the best to you and your bride. I bet Sept. 20th is the best date of this year for you.

    Be well and travel safely.

    -Angie
