Ask AmericanLola

I enjoy writing about life in the Philippines, and especially enjoy helping people understand cultural aspects of life in the Philippines. I in no way claim to be the supreme authority on such things, but what I have learned, I can share. I also enjoy talking about Cebuano and explaining things I have learned in hopes that it will make things easier for others. But, it is not always easy for me to think up a post from thin air! So, I am going to open it up for anyone who would like to ask a question in comments, and I will do my best to answer. As always, others will also chime in with their their ideas, so your questions will get several answers for sure!

On another note, AmericanLolo and I will be leaving for a year in the States at the end of this month! We are bustling around getting things ready to go, and things ready to stay. For us, whenever we ‘go home,’ we leave home. We very much look forward to seeing all our kids (7) and grandkids (14) and my parents and sisters and all our friends! We will be living out of suitcases from the time we leave this month until the beginning of October! Good thing we are still young! :-) We look forward to keeping in touch with all of you through LiP!

  5. Dear American Lola, you are for me unique and rare. Your words of wisdom and all the things you shared with us have been precious and wonderful. I wish you and your husband all the best in the U.S. If it’s still possible, try to remain in LiP. I know from many people, that, including me, we learned a lot lessons in life BECAUSE OF YOU. Thank you very much for that and God bless you and your family.

  6. My goodness! I am a little embarrassed by all this praise! Maybe I am having an online funeral! :-) But thank you John, Bob, Jim and Klaus! I am glad to be able to be of some help! It is really fun for me to be a part of this online community, and I do plan to keep writing while we are in the States! Next time we are in Davao, we MUST meet John and Klaus!

Yes, as Jim said, we had the wonderful occasion of having Jim and his lovely wife, Marilou, come for a visit! And they brought books! That should keep us out of trouble for a while! Jim has the perfect Scottish brogue and has great stories to tell! I hope we can see them again after they make the big move and we return from the States!

  7. Hi American Lola , THANKS!!! Looking forward to see you. take care!

  8. Hi AmericanLola

It was lovely to have finally met you. I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time with your family in the US. By the time you return to CDO, Jim and I would have settled in Talakag. That just gives me enough time to gather enough cocoa beans to dry and store, ready for you to show me how to make those lovely homemade dark chocolates.

  9. Oh yes, Marilou, we’ll have a chocolate making party! I want to make some to take to the States,, but may not have time… Addictive stuff! Glad you liked it!

  10. I have come to accept your wisdom when I read your insightful article on the Philippine medical emergencies. Even without meeting you, I can tell that there’s a beautiful person behind that smile. I wish you and AmLolo many wonderful memories in seeing your family again.

  11. Hi AmericanLola - It’s really a great pleasure knowing you and American Lolo. I hope you will be back in a year though. I know your kids, grand kids and family are happy seeing you back there. See you a lot here on LIP. Take care and God bless!

  12. Hi AmericanLola,

I brought the Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Bar for you as I promised. It is currently in Manila. I had instructed my niece to mail it to you when I get your address. Now, I read that you will be leaving at the end of this month, which is only 2 weeks away. I hope the chocolate bar makes it to you before you leave. I will email you and you can let me know where to send it.

Bon voyage! Hope we get to meet you and AmericanLolo sometime…

  13. Hi American Lola—I haven’t corresponded with you when I was writing for LiP blog, and that was an error on my part. Now I just want to say that you’re as much a Filipina—if not more—than most Filipina I know. I’m glad to be your silent and devoted reader. Godspeed on your future adventures. Till next time….

  14. Best wishes for the trip, and, as you mentioned, you can stay in touch. We don’t want to see you actually ‘gone’ for a whole year. It strikes me some very useful posts could come from this becuase, after all, going back to ‘the other home’ is a big thing for anyone living here … both emotionally and practically.
