We looked at Cagayan de Oro City through AmericanLola's eyes a while back, but as we can all appreciate, a new set of eyes can bring a different perspective. With that in mind, let's have a second look at CdO, this time through the eyes of Mike Farrell. Mike has been living in Cagayan de Oro City for twelve years now, and is currently residing in Gusa, Cagayan de Oro. Let's have a look at my questions and Mike's answers: 1. What City do you live in? Gusa, Cogayan de Oro 2. How long have you lived in this City? Twelve years 3. Can you give a price range of housing in the area that would be appropriate for a foreigner? Low end? High end? … [Read more...]

Merry Christmas
Well, it's Christmas again! It seems like we just celebrated the New Year, but 2007 has just about gone full circle already! I have had a lot of great things happen in my life in 2007, and I am so thankful for those successes. Of course, I've had failures too, but thankfully, those have been few. One thing that I have been extremely fortunate in is the success of this particular website. The Live in the Philippines Web Magazine didn't even exist when 2007 started, the site existed, but was just a relatively obscure blog at the time. Since then, the site has gone through many changes, upgrades and then totally changed it's flavor becoming … [Read more...]
Season is Thoughts
The most awaited season of the year has finally come. The most joyous month is here at last. At times it really makes me wonder what life would be without December. Something is indeed very special on this season, which brings changes not only in the atmosphere but also in our zest for life and living. The air begins to get cooler especially in the mornings when the fields and remaining forests are embraced and kiss by the fog, that slowly descends upon the earth. The first streak of light that pierces the darkness of earth is the sign of life. The stillness of the dawn which has long been awakened by the crowning of the fowls and singing of … [Read more...]
We miss you mom
Today's Guest Column is from Kevin Smith. It’s been a very hectic week and I’m running on empty. I’m very sad to say my mom died last Saturday (Dec 15th). We left last Thursday early in the morning and drove to New Jersey in a severe snow and ice storm. By the time we got to the hospital it was all sleet and hail and the traffic was sliding in every direction. My gift from God, though, was that my wife and I and our daughter were able to talk to mom and be with her for most of the day. I was even optimistic that she would be getting out in a week or so. The next day she got worse and early Saturday morning she passed as we all held her … [Read more...]
Losing Face
As Westerners, we do not know what this means. We use the words ‘embarrassed,’ ‘shy’ and even ‘ashamed,’ but none of these come close to the meaning behind the words in Filipino languages that are translated to the English words mentioned above. The Philippines, as well as other Asian countries, have a predominately ‘Shame/Honor’ culture. This means that interactions at all levels are about people being treated with respect, and people being honored appropriately and preserving each others ‘face.’ It is also about avoiding dishonor, avoiding situations where one would look foolish, or have their ignorance exposed, or be made … [Read more...]
The guilt…
... as innermost part of ourselves. Filipinos call it "Utang na Loob". I still owe you something, or better, I owe you more than that. We are not talking about debts - "utang na loob" goes farer. It's a more complicated and far-reaching matter, because we have to pay back our personal debts plus high interests, even these debts can't be express in figures. "Utang na loob" becomes a "spider's web of mutual dependencies". I give you a job and you have to be thankful to me life-long. I also accept material gifts from time to time. In human relations every Filipino is connected to one and another and vice versa because of "utang na loob". Is that … [Read more...]
A peek at Naga City, Bicol
Today let's head up north and look at Naga City, in Bicol. Anybody who has been around the Philippines much has heard of "Bicol Express," which is a super spicy cuisine that reigns from Bicol (of course!), this is about the only part of the Philippines that specializes in spicy food! But, we are not going there to eat today, we want to check the place out and see how suitable it might be as a place to live. Our guide today is Jim, who is a well known fixture on a number of Philippine related e-groups, and I've been reading his excellent posts and absorbing his knowledge for years. Let's see what he has to say about living in Naga City. … [Read more...]
