Would you work for nothing?

I told you last week in my article “NO RICE” about my friend who has stomach problems and his struggle to find work.

Well a little follow up on this with my help he managed to get all the paperwork required to get a job in DAVAO CITY, medical certificates, police clearance several interviews and many many hours standing long queues to get the job.
Despite ill health and the heat and lack of food he stayed in those lines in order to fulfill his promise to me to get his job.

Glad to say he started work on Friday and despite stomach pains he worked for ten long hours and at the end of the day he was told his daily wages was 100 PESOS ONLY, YES 100 PESOS.
HE CALCULATED COST OF BASIC FOOD FOR THE DAY AS FOOD WAS NOT SUPPLIED, AND COST OF THE TRANSPORT.

When I saw him last week he was close to tears as he had endured so much to get the job and then he realizes its impossible to continue and now his self respect is down and he feels desperate and although he braves me a smile I can see the pain and  I see his pride now also suffering too.

Today I spent p250 on him to stop a tooth pain hes endured for two weeks, which is probably causing some of his stomach difficulties too, and tonight he will use this PC to make up another resume and start the long process all over again.

GOD BLESS HIS STRENGTH AND DETERMINATION!!!

Hi John – I can only say – Best of luck to your friend! I hope that he is able to turn things around and enjoy a good life. And, thanks to you for showing your sympathy to him too.

Yep, that’s the way it is here. It is so sad. There are so many people who would work, and work hard, too, if they could only get a job, but they don’t have the right connections. And there are many who work, and work hard, only to find that they cannot even buy rice with what they get at the end of the week or month. People also have a very hard time finding work if they are over the age of 28, especially for minimum wage jobs. There are an abundance of youthful applicants who are willing to work as ‘casuals’ for 5 months with no benefits, then they hire a new batch.

I have a friend who just quit her job working for a Brit and his Filipina girlfriend. She was expected to work hard all day and be on call all night… she managed this, but the final blow was when she realized that they had quit paying her a couple months back.

I am glad you are helping this fellow! It might be worth the investment of time to take him to DMG and have him get a check up to see if he has an ulcer or something.

Hi John, its really great with help and support you have given our friend already. Carry on, I will do the same when I get back there too.
I know he has the strength and determination to get back on his feet again, if only he is given the opportunity.
Keep going and send him my love.
