Over the last few days I have been visiting a remote area in Mindanao called Matalam I was invited to be a judge in a beauty pageant.

Happpy New Year 2009

Whilst resting in my resort rooms  I was aware of many little eyes looking at me from over a wall, and eventually I asked them why they were staring.

With big smiles they said they had not seen a white man before!!

They then agreed to the following video message for LIP readers. No more words needed.

That’s funny! Wait till I arrive; a black man with red hair (little left) with freckles. I was asked just the other day by a filipina here in the states if I were filipino? Over the years I have heard that question asked by Puerto Ricans, Hawaiians, Samoans, etc., from those respective groups. Have even been asked if I were half black, half white or part Indian, Guamanian,Jordanian, Saudi Arabian, etc.

I’m just a poor foreigner whose parents are both black, but with some white and cherokee indian blood. Some would say that I am red or orange. Oh well, there’s nothing for me to do about it.

  5. Hi John, I had the same thing happen to me in Bacolod, also in a swimming pool, but not on New Years! The children seem to be very curious. Love the video!
Happy New Year to you too!

    Kamusta po John,

That video is great, is still hard to believe that some of these kids have not seen a white person or foreigner. I can understand some of the smaller villages in remote areas, but would think that most have seen some around the larger cities there in Philippines. Of course I am not sure where you were when you took this video either.

But is a great little video……its always great to see those smiles on childrens faces.

    Salamat,
    Danny
