An introduction
Today, we are welcoming a new writer to the Live in the Philippines Web Magazine! Our new writer’s name is Carlin O’Neal. Carlin is an expat from Spain, and has been living in the Philippines for several years now.
I’ve known Carlin for a while now, and have been urging him to join us on this site, sharing information about living here, and he finally agreed to do so! Carlin lives in Zamboanga City in Western Mindanao.

New Contributor, Carlin O'Neal
.
I won’t give too much detail about Carlin, because I’ll let him decide how to introduce himself to the site, and I am sure you’ll be hearing more from him very soon (probably later today). What I will say is “Welcome Aboard, Colin”. We are happy to have you on LiP, and I wish you a lot of success on the site. We have a lot of great readers here, and I’m sure that you’ll add to our list of great writers too. I’m looking forward to hearing more about life in Zamboanga.

As my next topic of the day, I’d like to announce that I have a new book that I am offering for people who are interested in Living in the Philippines! My new book, Culture Clash: Can you handle the culture of the Philippines?, is over 450 pages, and covers one of my favorite topics these days, cultural differences in the Philippines.
Over the past year or so, I’ve written quite a bit on this site about Culture, and I’ve decided to roll that into a book and offer it to people who think they want to live here. The culture here is not so easy to adjust to, and that is something you need to be aware of before you make the big move! That is what this book is all about.
This book is a compendium of cultural information about the Philippines, and what is different about it compared to most Western Countries. Much of this information can be found here on LiP, but only if you are willing to search. This book puts all of that information in a logical sequence and groups it into similar subject manner, making it an easy to read guide for those thinking of making the move.
Because of the length of the book (450+ pages), this book is available only as an electronic download. No paper copies this time. So, you can purchase it, then download it and read it right away, no waiting for the mailman.
As I said, in the past year or so, I have really gotten interested in the cultural aspects of living here and adjusting to life here. If I had known in 2000 what I know now about culture, adjusting to life here would have been much easier for me, and that is one of the reasons I wanted to offer the book – to make it easier for you to move here!
So, if you are interested in the book, it is $29.99, and can be ordered in the LiP Store, or in the Auctiontopia Bookstore.
I hope you enjoy it.

Good going Bob

Way to go Bob
The first book i ever read before coming to the Philippines was of similar title though i don’t remember the author or publisher .
I did gain some insights via that book but i am certain would gain more insight had i read your version .
Hi Bob,
I get tickled each time you introduce something/someone new to the site. When can we expect a “family reunion” of us LiP readers?
Carlin O’Neal..mmmm..doesnt sound Spanish to me..sounds more Irish..LOL..looking forward to reading his first article though.
Hi Kuya Bob,
I have a Canadian friend in Arnel Pineda site and she wants to know more about the Philippines so I referred your site to her.
Goodluck to the new writer
hi Bob- Best wishes for the book, it should be essential reading for anyone considering moving to the Philippines, and anyone who doesnt have much knowledge,of, or understanding of the culture.
I remember my first trip there, when I arrived at this remote island, in a barangay full of nippa huts, people EVERYWHERE ( heaps turned out to see the kano) no one speaking english. There were no formal introductions, so I didnt know who anyone was. Then there was the sights and smells that totally overwhemed me. Yes I was SHOCKED.
Soon I started to work out who were my brothers/sisters in law were and started conversing with them ( as you know they can be very shy) but as soon as I did this I learnt to be very polite, respectful (not to swear too much) ( my wife kept pulling me up on my mistakes)
Anyway I could imagine someone in that situation who had sold up their previous life and made the move to permanently live in the Philippines and arriving to total culture shock AAAAAAAAAH!!!
I think anyone considering such a move would be foolish to not do as much research as possible. Your book will hopefully be well recomended for people thinking of such a moove.
Bob thank you for welcoming me! I am excited to join the site, and I hope that I can contribute something here. I just got online and saw that my first article is already publish, and I am so proud!
Bob about the book ..I hope you edited out all my commits ..I didn’t get a press release from from you yet …:)

Hi Phil – a new day, and a new writer on LiP! It’s like a fresh start.
Hola Phil n Jess: I hope my ideas won’t be too crazy for the site, but I will do my best. Thank you for welcoming me to the site.
Hi Alan – Thank you for your kind words. I do hope that people gain helpful information from the book, nothing would make me happier!
Hi Henry – I’ve toyed with the idea of doing some kind of get-together on a larger scale. Logistics might be tough, though, with readers and writers spread all over the world like this! Expect an article from Carlin later today!
Hi Henry – thank ou for being the first to comment on my first article, and for looking forward to having me on the site!
Hi Eric – You’re a smart guy… just hold on and you’ll find out about his name!
Hola Eric: man, I can’t believe you almost caught me! Yep, I am Irish, but only half Irish though! Visit my artiecle.
Thank you Philmor!
Gracias for your support, Filmore!
