WordCamp Philippines

Last year, 2008, was the first time that there was a WordCamp in the Philippines.  Do you know what WordCamp is?  Well, it is a sort of convention for WordPress users.  WordPress is Blogging/Content Management software that is used for websites like LiP.  Here at LiP we are based on WordPress software and always has been.

My good friend, Blogie Robillo is the leader of the WordCamp movement in the Philippines.  But, WordCamp is not a Philippine thing!  WordCamp is a worldwide event that takes place in many different locales around the world each year.  Blogie is the person who got it started in the Philippines, though.  Do you remember last year when Matt Mullenweg visited the Philippines and I had dinner with him?  Matt is the creator of WordPress.  When Matt visited the Philippines, that was to attend the Inaugural WordCamp Philippines event.

Well, Blogie is in the midst of putting together the 2009 Edition of WordCamp Philippines.  I am not sure if I will be there or not, but I might try.  But, if you are a WordPress user, maybe you would like to be in the Philippines during that time so that you can attend and meet other bloggers in the Philippines.  Most of the “big name” bloggers in the Philippines will almost certainly be there, and it would be a great chance to meet them.

So far, no schedule for the event is finalized, but it will be soon.  Last year WordCamp was in September, so it is likely that it will happen sometime around that time frame again this year.  Pencil in that timeframe on your calendar.  If enough LiP readers will attend, I’ll make a point to go myself.

I’d certainly like to attend. Blogie and I got on the wronmg sid eof each other, I think, last year over a silly peripheral issue. I think we are now on good terms, I hope. be sure to let him know I’m certainly available to help.

  2. Bob, Are there two word press, one is wordpress.com, the other is wordpress.org ? Or are they under one management? Here in US, Googles Inc, blogspot.com is the popular one.

  3. Thank You, Bob for the clarification. I learn new things in this magazine almost every day. This is one reason, why I am an avid reader of this site. Cheers!

Hey Bob! Thanks for this post! I sure hope you will be able to attend at least the Davao leg of WordCamp. After all, you’re one of the earliest users of WordPress out here.

Hi Dave – I will do that. Blogie is really a nice guy, and if you guys somehow hit it off in the wrong way, I am sure it was unintentional on both of your parts, because I know both of you well. Blogie has been a friend for about 15 years now, and he has always done right by me! I’ll tell him, next time I see him that you are available.

Hi David – WordPress.com is a hosted service from WordPress. WordPress.org is from the same company, software that you host yourself. Blogger, like WordPress.com is a hosted service. Most serious bloggers host their own blogs, and don’t use a hosted service. Why? Because, if you put up a site on Blogger, for example… Google owns the content that you put there! You don’t own it anymore! I prefer to retain ownership of the things that I write.

Hi David – Happy to help…

Hi Blogie – I wasn’t sure if there was a Davao leg this year, but since there is, I will sure plan to attend that. Manila…. well, maybe!
