Sometimes it’s really interesting to research and analyze polls in the Philippines. For me, I am still keep on learning when it comes to this country and its people.

Sure, many things are known when we let Filipinos talk and explain about the fields of endeavor most Filipinos tend to excel in.

Allow me enumerate several examples, and please let me know if they are correct or not. Don’t get me wrong, these are examples, which have been voiced out by Filipinos.

Love of family is the most important value of Filipinos. This is the reason why Filipinos work hard and grab any opportunity they can, even to the point of leaving behind their love ones, sacrificing loneliness and disregarding all the hazards along the way, even risking their lives in order to make sure food is on the table for the family and enough money for children’s education!

Filipinos excel in the field of labor export , as evidenced by the fact that 10 million Pinoys are out of the country helping the Philippine economy afloat.
Philippine Oversea Workers can be find all over the world.

Filipinos are excellent in the medical field. It’s sad however, that they have to practice their profession outside the country to sustain a life of comfort. Care giving – nursing – just to add two more.

Filipinos can do a portion of everything. This, however, isn’t very effective, when specialization is highly in demand.

Filipinos really excel in any endeavor – good or bad. It’s really up to them to choose.

Yes, Filipinos are really excel in the field of entertainment, sports, music or science. Filipinos love to sing and dance. Filipinos are really great entertainers.

Filipinos do very well in micro or medium-scale businesses. Putting customer first in their endeavors have made them very successful entrepreneurs.

Filipinos talents are unlimited. They can be the best in any field.

As I said, these have been some of many examples, voiced out by Filipinos themselves. Interesting… .

What do you think as Filipino or Expat reader?

    Hi Klaus,

    Hi Klaus
All of the points are so valid, however to me its the love of family and the strength of the family unit which really stands out above all else

So basically what your pointing out is that Filipino’s are like everyone else in the world, trying to make a decent living to support the family they love ?

Hi Klaus, I think when it comes to endeavors, the Filipino people can’t be outdone when it comes to being good hosts at parties and celebrations. They really know how to party and make their guests feel welcome and at home. Even in a poor family, should unexpected guests arrive from out of town, they will graciously and happily slaughter their only chicken or goat for everyone to enjoy.
When it comes to formal celebrations, be it in the small barangay or in a big town or city, programs are always very organized, with everyone doing their part with music, dancing, costumes singing speeches etc. It’s always accomplished with dash and style!

  5. Filipos are a unique culture in some ways but not all. We extend help not just to immediate family members but to anyone if we can afford it. Even one day worth of food and clothing can go a long way. Like Queenibee said, we are very good party hosts whether big and small. I agree with Klaus about Filipinos excelling in their chosen endeavors especially abroad, we wanted to show first class service to our customer it’s innate and a must if it’s our only source of income and people back home is relying on it. We are hardworking people(second nature) and rarely complains but at the end of the day we just want to keep our jobs and put food on the table just like anyone else. Don’t get me wrong other Filipinos can be butt lazy too and would rather stay at home with the parents and help out with chores rather than exploring and try to better themselves. In today’s generation, i can say there’s a lot more young Filipinos if given a chance/opportunity would rather work hard for little money than be a parasite. Working abroad is even better, doesn’t matter if it’s Dubai,Hongkong and Malaysia even if it’s the same salary in the Philippines or little bit more and living in a rat hole room as long as it’s a job that compensates each month. Now if the government can do something with unemployment and salaries raise for the professionals to stay things would have been different. I would have stayed 9yrs ago if given a decent salary to support my basic needs(single woman) and my family.

Actually Filipinos left the country not only for the love of the family but also to seek greener pasture since our gov’t cannot provide a better employment for us (whether we are highly educated or not ) to feed our families and it is not just an anomaly but it is a trend, “the filipino diaspora”, Filipinos learned to fight and survived but some didn’t make it and return to Phils and face whatever life the phils can offer them. It’s sad but it’s a reality. But i also admired FILIPINOS for our unique culture, our great endeavor are one of the best trait coz we are willing to sacrifice and face all adversity in order to survive and build a better future for our family back home. We are the 40,000 skilled nurses who supported the UK National Health Care Service, we are the 1/3 million sea farers mannings most of the world’s commercial ship. We are your software engineer in Ireland, your construction workers in the Middle East, your doctors and caregivers in North America, your house help in Asia and your musical artist in LONDON’S WEST END, a very remarkable traits of being a Filipino. Sometimes i wonder a world w/o a filipinos. what will happen then?

I was quite impressed with the educational facilities I toured there. It seems a shame there are so many qualified people that can not gain employment in their own country and even if they do, by comparison, the pay they receive is mind baffeling to someone from many other parts of the world.

Klaus, thanks for so many informative articles that you have made available on this website, I am sure many will miss your articles in the future, including me. Thanks again for so many hours of good reading !

    Hi Everyone,

Gary here in Michigan. I was married for 25 years to a woman from the Philippines. She too had left the Philippines to work in Hong Kong. She got her mother over to the States and she in turn got her unmarried son. Everyone that leaves the Philippines is the “cream of the crop.” That has done more harm to the country and the family than anything else.

The husband leaves and works overseas. Starts a new family and forgets the ones he left behind. Happens everyday. Read the famous study about men in the Philippines that showed that 86% of married men cheat on their wife. I have no words for that. I also read a study that showed over 50% of the kids in college in the Philippines are having sex. Gee, I wonder where they learned that from?

To tell the truth it just isn’t the Philippines at fault. Every country you live in has the same problem. Nothing new, it has been like this for thousands of years. The only trouble now is the church has gone the way of the world. If we don’t get back to a moral lifestyle then the family is doomed. Here in the States couples just live together. Why get married? You read in the local newspaper of all the new borns that have two last names. Just put a “-” between the names. Don’t worry about getting married.

Back to the Philippines: Want to improve life there? Kick Del Monte and Dole out and give the land back to the people that had it before. Bring all the overseas workers home and watch things improve at home. It will take a few years but it can be done.

The only trouble with all of that is a bunch of expats would have to find somewhere else to live. Life for a bunch of old guys wouldn’t be so cheap anymore. Me? Tagum City next spring. Meriam just found us a great townhouse there. I will marry that great woman just a soon as I can get there…Filipinos really are a great people.

Sorry to see ya leave Klaus. All the best in what ever you do next.
