This post will be updated throughout the day, May 10, Election Day in the Philippines. This will not be for updating who is leading or anything like that, but rather to just update any election news, balloting problems, etc. I will update this post as news warrants throughout the day. Updates will be listed at the top of the post, not at the bottom.
5:00pm Update
Failure of elections declared in 4 towns in Lanao del Sur Province. Apparently, they never received ballots in these areas.
2 dead in Cavite Election Violence
Various groups are asking the Comelec to extend voting hours. Originally voting was to close at 6pm. This morning the Comelec agreed to extend closing until 7pm, but it appears that additional hours are still necessary.
PNP has announced that as of this time there have been 82 incidents of election related violence.
1:30pm Update
Some polls in Maguindanao have been shut down due to election related violence. It is reported that a firefight has broken out between the Philippine Army and some armed groups attempting to disrupt the voting.
Some vote buying problems have been reported in Bacolod City, and there is even video on TV of some of the activity.
65 PCOS Machines are reportedly not functioning in Isabela Province. The TV news just reported that the problem has been diagnosed as heat related, with the temperature in the area being too high for the machines to function reliably.
12 Noon Update
Senator Noynoy Aquino has been waiting in line in Tarlac for about 2 hours now to vote. PCOS machines at his Precinct are not functioning.
The biggest complaint among the voting public is that lines at the polling places are very long. Many are reporting waiting in line for 3 hours or more to vote.
Davao City Precincts are reporting about 40 people per hour (per precinct) are being processed. Comelec says that any number under 60 per hour is worrisome.
First Report – 10:05 am
So far, everything seems to be going smoothly in the elections. There have been a few issues with PCOS machine failures, but relatively minor problems in different regions of the country. Problems seem to have been addressed in a timely manner so far.
There have been explosions reported in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, and in North Cotabato Province.
There has been some political violence reported in Abra Province.
On a slightly comedic note, I saw that on the GMA TV Network, the election coverage news includes a set of dancers in the studio! As they go in and out of commercial breaks, the dancers take the stage to give a dance for the viewers! I commented to Feyma that it seems to be kind of the “Wowowee” style election coverage!

Hope you have a safe and peaceful election day.
I agree, Bob! I hope all of the Philippines has a safe election!
Bob: I asked Rebecca about Abra, since it is same region as Cagayan, and she said that every election, there are problems in Abra, for as long as she can remember. It is highly mountainous, few roads, and very limited interaction with Manila. They’ve always been fiercely independent there… The Spanish and the Americans never really 100% conquered it.
This weekend a body washed up on the beach in Abulug, and it was blamed on the election…And elections are generally peaceful there.
Moral of the story:
If there is ever any day for foreigners to keep a low profile and keep their mouths shut, today is the day. No matter how long you have lived here, you can never really know all of the old hatreds, feuds, and vendettas that come in the open at this time.
Hi John – I agree 100% on the moral of the story. Election time is not a time for foreigners to be out and about, especially in any capacity of participating in election, or even talking with Filipinos about the election. It is very dangerous.
I, for one, most definitely agree about laying low. Been doing that all month now.
So far, all’s quiet except for a single police car buzzing by 5 minutes ago with siren blaring and lights blazing. One policeman was the only occupant. Perhaps it’s a late shift change?
btw, bamboo grapevine says one murder suspect (from May 1 political shooting) is currently sitting in jail. No newspapers or broadcast stations are willing enough to provide updates before elections are over.
Hey PaulK – Maybe that policeman was late for lunch?

MANILA, Philippines—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has delayed the release of the official results website amid security fears that it could be hacked. Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal said the poll body has decided to announce the address of the site later today.
“We will release the URL [uniform resource locator] a little later in order to minimize the possibility of hacking,” Larrazabal said. “If we give it now, we are sure that people will try to hack it immediately,” he added.
The website will contain the results of the election returns from all 76,300 precincts and the running totals in local and national contests

Thanks, ian. I have been checking out the Davao results! I can’t find anything about Davao on TV, but that Comelec site gives a good rundown.
The daughter of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte appears headed to replace her father after taking an early lead against former House Speaker Prospero Nograles in the city’s mayoralty race.
As of 12:17 a.m. Tuesday, incumbent Vice-Mayor Sara Duterte got 352,506 votes over Nograles’s 146,283 votes. The City Board of Canvassers said it has already received 89% of the transmitted results of various clustered precincts in the city.
The incumbent mayor, meanwhile, got 400,315 votes in the race for the vice-mayor’s post. His rival, former mayor Ben de Guzman, got 95,975 votes.
Hi Ian – Yep! Inday Sara is indeed the newly elected Mayor of Davao, and with a huge landslide. Her father, won in an even bigger landslide over his Team Nograles opponent. The Dabawenyos really love the Dutertes, and this really shows it!
Duterte tandem wins Davao pollsBy SARAH JANE R. HILOMENMay 11, 2010, 6:55pmDAVAO CITY – The legacy continues as former Mayor Rodrigo Duterte bequeathed his post to his daughter, former Vice Mayor Sara Duterte, who won over House Speaker Prospero Nograles in an overwhelming fashion.
Though the Comelec is yet to proclaim the two Dutertes with the partial tally of votes at 97.09%, the younger Duterte got 380,268 over Nograles’ 157,615, while the incumbent mayor, who is running for the vice mayoralty post, got 431,244 over Benjamin de Guzman with 103,963 during the canvassing held at the Sangguniang Panglungsod Building here Tuesday.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) achieved 61.20% voter turnout or 566,213 voters out of the total 948,428 registered individuals in the city.
In a text message, the younger Duterte, who became the city’s first female mayor expressed gratitude to those who supported her.
“I’m grateful and I want to personally thank everybody and repay the voters’ trust with my hard work for the next three years,” she said.
Garnering more than twice the votes Nograles had, Duterte was still thankful despite her failed expectations.
“I had hoped it was a landslide win, but I’m thankful for the results,” she said
Personally, I think it was a landslide win for Sara… nearly 70% of the vote!
