Adding up to the festivities that are happening this school year, the Ateneo de Davao High School unit celebration, they call it the 2nd Academic Festival, which is ironic because I call it the break FROM academics.
A lot happened, like the crime scene investigation activity where a group of 4 would solve a crime in 3 stages, although we in 4th place, I am happy to say that I made up for it in math, the hardest subject in history, the 1st round was hard and I didn’t get into the top 5, but the 2nd round was easy with common sense and some calculations, so I got into the top 10, the third round was easy at the start, but got hard fast, after decoding the first word, I had a problem with the second, and kept on thinking, “What 6 letter word started with K and N,”, then I thought know, but it lacked 1 letter, and I thought of known, after that the top 3 out of 4 was already selected and so I had to think fast, the last word, I thought was “number”, yet again, the word was to long, and some letters were not in the choices, and after seeing the letters in the choices, I thought of the word “values” and as quickly as possible, rushed to the teacher and passed it, making me the top 4.
Another huge thing that I learned from a friend was that my poster for the Poster-Making contest using Adobe Photoshop was one of like 5 or 6 that were in the “Best Projects” category that was being displayed, I was 1 of 2 from my section, although he didn’t believe me until he really saw it, and even said he thought of it as mediocre (his work not mine).
The reason I think both of ours was accepted was that it was just simple yet elegant, what our teacher wanted. On the 2nd day of the event, a few schools went to ours as visitors, and we even got the chance to talk about the Vietnam War with a real Veteran, he said he was a medic in a reconnaissance unit, and didn’t carry a rifle because with his med kit being heavy, he didn’t need the rifle to add up to that weight, he was part of the Navy, but was a medic of the Marines, because the Marines don’t train medics, only borrow half from the Navy. He also said that his only weapon of self-defense was a pistol (most likely an M9, because it was standard issue). He also stayed an extra year and a half because it was easy to be promoted. A weird thing did happen to me only a few days after he talked to us about the Nam War, while I was watching the History Channel, the show was Sniper: Deadliest Missions, I saw two parts about the said war, I think the sniper was Carlos Norman Hathcock II, you know the guy who shot through a scope of an enemy from a far away distance, well what’s weird is that just realizing that both of them were in the Nam War is weird, because the Veteran was a Filipino, and Hathcock was an American and I thought the people fighting were the Vietnamese (the Vietcong to be specific) and just the Americans, but he said the war involved many allies of the U.S., like the Philippines.
Going back to the subject, we also had a quizbowl, I was not included, but me and my friends were playing along and played against each other, which was fun, after the day was over, I was thinking that there was still 4 weeks of school to go.
