The NBA Finals is happening now, between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. I’m not really sure which team I’m rooting for, because the Warriors beat my favorite team, the Portland Trailblazers, but I’m more of a west guy and I’m not that much of a Cavs guy. Since the Blazers were eliminated, I haven’t followed the Playoffs.
I was in SM about a week ago, and I saw a guy wearing a shirt with the Warriors logo on it and it got me thinking about how much their popularity has skyrocketed since Steph Curry joined them. They pretty much went from 0 to 100 and everyone seemed to jump onto the bandwagon. I’m not saying it’s wrong to like the Warriors, I just find it interesting that people all of the sudden like them. For the longest time, a lot of people here liked the Lakers, you’d see a lot of shirts, hats, jerseys and other merchandise around here for the Lakers.
Anyway, basketball is probably the most popular sport in the Philippines. A lot of people follow the NBA and PBA (Philippine Basketball Association). Something I noticed is, it’s hard to choose a favorite team here because it’s not like the NBA where each team is tied to a location, like Portland Trailblazers or Boston Celtics. In the PBA, each team is sponsored by a company, like the Alaska Aces or San Miguel Beermen. I like Portland because I was born in Vancouver, which is right across the river from Portland, but I don’t really care about most brands here who sponsor teams, so I don’t care about PBA that much.
If you go around town, you’ll see a lot of basketball courts, and most of them would probably have some politicians name on it. That’s kinda what I noticed, a lot of politicians will donate a basketball court to an area to gain favor. Nothing wrong with it, actually I think it’s good for the community having a place to play and hang out. Pretty much every school also has courts, my old school had a bunch of half courts too which me and my friends used to use all the time after school.
When I was in school, during Christmas, we had a Secret Santa thing in class. A lot of people weren’t really sure what they wanted and would usually write “whatever” on the list. If that does happen, a basketball is usually a good gift to get a guy. I’ve done it a couple times and they were always happy about it. My Dad also gave some kids around the neighborhood a basketball as a gift and they loved it. He would see them playing basketball whenever he passed them.
Anyway, just a quick article because the NBA Finals are almost done. It’s a shame Portland got eliminated, but there’s always next year. They do have an almost new team this year, and they didn’t do too good at the beginning but really pulled it together later on. I still think they can do it.
