I absolutely hate bugs. They are weird, creepy and annoying. Unfortunately for me, the Philippines is packed full of them.
My Dad sometimes tells me about people who come here and see a roach and immediately freak out over it, like it means the place is dirty or something like that. The truth is, no matter where you go, there will be bugs. You just gotta learn to live with them. A lot of houses here aren’t really built to the same standard as the States, that means that there are imperfections (whether it be holes, cracks, whatever) that are ideal for roaches to set up camp. Trust me, once they decide to set up camp (which they will), there’s no getting rid of them. The best you can do is make sure you clean stuff every-so-often.
Mosquitoes are another big problem. The caveat with them is, they can actually spread some pretty deadly diseases really quickly. At the top of the list of these diseases is dengue fever. You really wanna be careful with mosquitoes. Make sure there’s no stagnant water around your house, and just take other precautions. There’s actually a really cool DIY thing I saw online a few months back on how to kill off thousands of these things fairly quickly. You take a big outdoor fan, put a screen over one side and just have it suck up the mosquitoes into the screen when you check on it to clean it, just spray it down with rubbing alcohol which will kill them. Ideally, you’d place the fan near a hotspot for mosquitoes (if you have a pet, they will usually attract mosquitoes for example). I really hate mosquitoes the most because of how annoying they are. I once read that if mosquitoes are one species that could completely disappear without affecting the environment too much, and scientists are actually working on this.
One bug I haven’t seen too much of here are bees. Most likely due to the fact that we live kinda in the middle of the city. I would think bees would favor more of the outskirts or somewhere with plenty of flowers and plants and such. Where we live, there’s too much traffic, not too much in the way of flowers and if they were to build a hive, it would most likely be torn down fast by the people here. I’m not complaining, would not want to go outside to a few bees buzzing around. Although I’d take bees over wasps or hornets any day of the week.
The bug I hate the most would probably be spiders. They seriously give me the chills. And just as I started to write this part, I start to feel like spiders are crawling all over me. I understand that they actually help me by controlling the other bug population, but I still don’t like them… I’m just gonna move on cause this is getting uncomfortable.
So yes, bugs are a reality here. While in Washington, I barely saw any bugs. Definitely not a single roach in the house, mosquitoes were a minimum, bees I might see every now and again, those seem more common there than here. If you plan on living here, be ready to see these creepy crawlies every day.
