We opened Cambridge Farm Hotel in late 1992, the same year that I arrived here to live permanently, at that time there were only about half a dozen hotels in the City and the City was pretty small also.
We did very well for the first 10 years or so as we always had lots of foreign customers who were working on infrastructure project around the area such as, the Makar Warfe Extension, many New Road Projects, the New Gen San Airport Project, Communications Projects, The Tampacan Mine Survey Project and of course, Treasure Hunters!
In the 2000’s the City really started on the development stage as we had Malls both built and burned down and infrastructure construction started in earnest. Someone started the rumor that Gen San was the Boom Town and also it would be the Convention Capitol of Mindanao and people were encouraged to buy land at craze prices and construct accommodation in order to house all the guests who would be flocking to the City. People started building Hotels, Pension Houses, Small Apartments, Lodging Houses and all other forms of accommodation and in the usual manor, they over did it so there was and now is far too much accommodation available for even the busiest time in the City! With there being so many rooms available the owners starting to lower the prices to ridiculous levels and now, many hotels are up for sale and many more are still being constructed which seems a bit crazy but that seems to be the Gen San Business Model.
Cambridge Farm also felt the pinch at this time, guests did not want to pay for the better rooms, only the cheapest ones. We had been open for around 20 years at the time and it was time that lots of things in the rooms needed to be replaced or upgraded and the income being down on what it used to be and having had a couple of pretty serious problems like a Murder in one of the rooms and a drowning in the pool we decided to close the place down including the Swimming Pool and the Restaurant, only the Dive Shop was left open!
Many people have asked us if we will open up the Hotel again but I cannot see that happening as the ages of both me and Ellie are really against us for restarting business especially the kind which really occupies lots of time and effort in order to keep it functioning!
The end of the line has come for Cambridge Farm Hotel, now we have a 20 bedroom house covered be over 1,000 square meters of roof! Thats a lot of cleaning!
