My neighborhood is under lockdown

soldiers

Right now, as I type this, nobody can enter or leave the neighborhood where I live in Davao City.  There is an Armored Personnel Carrier parked in my driveway.  The street is blocked by Military and Police on either end.  The street is lined with military troops, with guns of course. Why? I have not mentioned too openly on this site (although I think I may have alluded to this in the comments, but Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. owns the house across the street from my house. Right now, starting about an hour ago, the military, Davao City Police and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is conducting a raid of the house.  … [Read more...]

Governor Ampatuan hospitalized in Davao

A Task Force Davao Soldier walks patrol in front of Davao Doctor's Hospital

Security is important for Davao City, and Task Force Davao, the military unit that has the task of protecting Davao City, is now securing Davao Doctor's Hospital as well as other locations around the city which are connected to both the Ampatuan family as well as the Mangudadatu family. Both of these families have residences in Davao City, and much of the families live in the City.  Task Force Davao is now trying to keep the two families from coming into contact with each other in the City, to avoid any possible flare ups of residual violence following the Maguindanao Massacre last week. After the arrest of Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. and … [Read more...]

It’s martial law…

It's Martial Law in Maguindanao

Yes, folks, you read the title correctly.  Martial law has been declared in Maguindanao Province.  As you will recall, Maguindanao is the site of the recent massacre of 64 people, including around 30 journalists, and more than 20 members of the Mangudadatu family. Last night at 9pm, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo issued a proclamation declaring Martial Law in the Province of Maguindanao.  I have also heard some reports that parts of Sultan Kudarat Province and Cotabato City are also under Martial Law at this time, although that is not clear to me at this time.  Most news is only mentioning Maguindanao. At around 2am this morning, … [Read more...]

Excuse the sawdust

sawdust

We are undergoing some renovation here on LiP today.  I ask that you excuse the virtual sawdust on the site as we move to a new server today! I have moved a lot of sites from the old server in the past week, and all went without a hitch.  LiP is the last one to move, and wouldn't you know it... the gremlins hit! What should have been a seamless move that users would not have even detected turned into a bit of a mess, and I'm having to redo some parts of the site!  Most of the kinds should be gone in a few hours.  Others may crop up over the next few days, and need me to address them. While things are put back into place, I do apologize … [Read more...]

Typhoon Pepeng (Parma) – Video

[youtube GlnWu7eJpuE] Typhoon Pepeng (International Name Parma) is currently making it's way through Northern Luzon, having made landfall there a few hours ago.  I have been keeping in touch with Paul Keating, who lives in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, not all that far from where the storm is passing through. Earlier today, Paul sent me a video of current conditions at his location.  Things are still fairly calm in the area, but Paul told me that he hopes to update me with additional videos as the storm passes through.  Of course, with the possibility of severe weather conditions, we can't be sure if Paul will be able to do additional videos or … [Read more...]

Now you can read me in the SunStar!

Just a quick announcement, everybody.  Effective today, I have a weekly column in the SunStar Davao Newspaper.  SunStar, I believe, is Davao's largest circulation newspaper, and I am happy to be featured there. My column is called "Mindanao Bob's Journal" and will appear every Friday in the SunStar Davao edition.  For this week's column, it is basically just an introduction of who I am and how I got here.  We'll get down to more serious issues next week. Unfortunately, this first column is not included in the Online edition of  SunStar, but perhaps future columns will be. … [Read more...]

Mindanao Gallery Online

I used to have a Mindanao Photoblog a number of years ago, where I did nothing but publish photographs of Mindanao.  A year or more ago, I merged my Photoblog in with my Mindanao Blog, and with the combination of the two, I created the Mindanao Magazine. The old Photoblog is still a category on Mindanao Magazine, and I feature photographs from all over Mindanao in that Category on the Magazine.  However, still, to this day, I get a lot of requests from people for a separate Photoblog again. Well, I recently decided to honor the request of those who ask for it, and I have recently launched The Mindanao Gallery.  Mindanao Gallery features … [Read more...]
