My wife and I have been looking for a new home to rent. The one we live in now is ok, but it has some issues that, over time, cause us grief unnecessarily. The house we are currently renting is elevated due to being in a lower area. When it was built, rather than having the house on stilts or having an open storage area underneath, they back filled. While I would not have deemed this an issue where I am from, it is for this location for sure. Ants. Yes, ants love this elevated house because it gives them a perfect place to build their homes, and stay dry year round, even in the rainy season. Because of the ant colonies under the house, they tend to make their way inside the house at an given time and they love to bite me. I guess I taste like chicken.
Also, we were not aware when we moved in here that there is a pig pen within thirty feet of the back of the house, which is by one of the bedrooms. Not good for opening windows to get air circulating, unless you like the smell of pigs. Granted, the workers take good care of the pigs and are constantly cleaning the pens, but it is simply not enough. Also, because of the pigs, flies love to hang out there. Opening the windows lets the flies inside the house. Since we can’t open the windows for fresh air, the house gets pretty hot and if we cook, it makes it all that much worse.
And, if you add on top of that the nosey neighbors watching our every move over the 3 foot high fence, you get one small problems after another that builds into a large problem. One which we would like to remedy.
So, we’ve been looking and looking. We found a couple of options which while increasing our rent payments a lot do provide us with a much nicer and larger house with screens over windows and unbelievably air conditioning throughout the houses. I am sure I would never run the air conditioning in the entire house, but it’s nice to have the option.
There are not many houses that I can walk in and immediately see myself living in, but this one had that instant appeal. It was designed well, and it flows very well. The outdoor kitchen is nice because, as the locals here know, cooking inside on a hot day(90% of them are hot) is a recipe for a hot house. And nobody wants their house to be so hot you can’t even sit down without sweating and being uncomfortable.
We have had a lot of problems with one individual that wants to buy this house. his problem is he doesn’t have the funds to buy it, but still is putting a wrench in the works for us in order to try to maintain the ability to keep it empty. In my opinion he does this out of his own greed and for no other reason. What bothers me, is that he is related by marriage, to the owner. And I don’t think she knows what he has done or continues to do.
It’s bothered me and has caused me a couple sleepless nights in the last couple of weeks. But, if we can’t close this deal soon, I will have to begin our search again for a different house. Even though this one does seem like the perfect house for our needs.
There is one other house that is available. It’s smaller than option1, but it does have an outdoor kitchen as well. Something I have found to be necessary in this climate.
Until next time, paalam, ingat, and God bless.
