A few days ago, I was looking through my Facebook feed and noticed something about Davao that one of my friends posted. It was about how Mayor Duterte has improved Davao, highlighting several awards the city has garnered since he started being mayor. As I read through it, I was shocked to see that Davao is actually the 4th safest city in the world. Then I thought about it, and it made sense.
I have lived in Davao for over 12 years now, and in that time, there have only been a handful of serious crimes here, at most. One actually happened just last year when some kidnappers were trading the victim for ransom here, a shootout started and 3 people (part of the kidnapper group) were killed. After the incident, the mayor told criminals not to mess around in Davao. Another incident was the bombing of 2 malls, no one was seriously injured, but it was still scary.
I actually have a friend who used to live here, but moved to Manila for college, she used walked home at night alone without any problems, she said the same can’t be said for Manila. I also haven’t had any problems walking around the city. Davao actually has the first 911 service in Asia, and a lot of people say that the personnel are some of the best.
You won’t only find Davao a safe place in terms of crime, but also in terms of traffic. Davao has a 60/40/30Kph speed limit depending on the area. They have been strict in enforcing this, while riding a jeep home from visiting my Dad in the hospital while he was there, there were some officers that had speed guns checking for speeders. There are also police stationed at some places to discourage traffic violations and crime in general.
Another really good law is the firecracker/fireworks ban, so every new year, there aren’t any fireworks in the sky, which translates to less injuries and casualties. This also ties into the environmental aspect of Davao, which is actually the cleanest and greenest highly-urbanized city in the Philippines, this is due, in part, to the no smoking law, which states that you can’t smoke in any public place in Davao (basically you can only smoke in your house or in your friends house, or any private place), which I like.
The main point in making this article was the misconception that Davao, or even Mindanao, is dangerous, obviously there are some areas to stay away from in Mindanao, but Davao is not one of those places. It kind of reminds me of Gotham City, especially in “The Dark Knight”, well before the Joker runs amok of things, no major crime, a strict person who enforces justice and is safe.
Well anyway, I hope some of you now know that Davao is a very safe place.
