Good morning LiP readers! I have awoken to the bright lights of the morning sun, the crowing of roosters, the sounds of children playing before school, and an Aircon running. Yes, aircon! I am now in the Philippines!! I have arrived!!!!!
It has been a very hectic past couple of weeks, but my wife and I are now in the Philippines for an extended vacation. We’ve decided to call it this as my wife is not completely sold on the idea of staying here. I have to say, the trip over here was HORRIBLE. Not because of the flight service but because of the LONG flight times. This could be a long story so settle into your chair really good, and if you need to get yourself some coffee, soda, or other beverage of your preference then do so now. 🙂
Anyone that reads my articles knows that I am, to say it nicely, frugal. I personally don’t see anything wrong with saving money. I mean, who wouldn’t like to pay less for something especially if it is the same item, right? So, I tried every avenue to find the cheapest flight I could. And I did. And do you know what, it was probably the worst thing I could have done! Typically when traveling, I would simply find a deal on the web site of my preferred airline, and book a ticket. The problem, is that the prices since I last traveled have increased dramatically! So, I contacted a local travel agency to get a price, and they came back with a deal that I simply could not refuse. It was a HUGE savings. So, what could I do, right? So, I gave the information of my wife and I, and my credit card information and the tickets were bought. Confirmation emails were sent, and all was well in the Fortune household.
As a retired law enforcement officer, there are things that I would have rather lived without seeing, and attitudes about people I would rather not have to live with today. One of these things is trust. I just don’t have the ability to trust someone until it is earned. That is something that is different than before I took on that line of work. So, following my well engrained lack of trust of people to do what is right, both ethically and professionally, I checked recent activity on my credit card. It seems as though my mistrust actually served me well this time as there was an additional $5,491 USD charge on my card!! So, what did this mean for me? It meant that instead of maximizing the enjoyment of spending time the last few days in the USA with friends and family and finalizing the last remaining items on my “TO DO” list, I was running around to the travel agent, getting corrections, canceling my credit card, and getting a new card mailed Expedited delivery sent to my home before we were scheduled to leave. Not only that, but my car I was selling before my departure decided to have mechanical problems. Anyone that has ever sold a second hand car knows that a check engine light is a sure way to NOT sell your car. So, to the dealer it went, to be serviced and fixed. That part actually went well. The car was fixed and sold the day before our flight!! Just in time!!
So, why am I complaining, right? I’m actually not, I don’t think. Heck, maybe I am and don’t even know it. All I know is that when you have been waiting for as long as we have and all of the “chips” fall into place, as they say, and the time dwindles away faster than you ever thought possible, you start to realize not only how much there is to do to finalize a move, but you really need to prepare for the unexpected. And while I didn’t do that very well, we completed our requirements of saying goodbye to our friends, albeit not for as long as I would have liked. Chores were finished on time, and the last of our boxes were picked up for shipping to the Philippines.
This story has so much more to get you all up to date, but for now I will finish for the day. Heck, I’ve already been here five days and am starting my sixth. My wife and her family have gone off to shop for fruits and vegetables and some other necessities, and have been gone since before dawn. I used to get up bright and early to hunt deer, so I understand their “hunt” for fruits and vegetables and to get it all at a good price. Apparently, the market where we live is expensive, so they have traveled to a land far, far away to get them all at a discount.
Oh… and the extra charges to my card? Cleared with an apology from my travel agent, one whom I will never use again.
Until next time, paalam, ingat and God bless!
