In recent months, I have been absolutely inundated with inquiries from foreigners staying in the Philippines about a problem, the same problem for all of them. They are here illegally. They have overstayed their visa.
Fact is, there is no excuse for overstaying. As a foreigner in a foreign land, it is your responsibility to make sure that your visa is up to date and that you are complying with the laws of your host country. If you are not in compliance, you would be best to get compliant, or you may face serious trouble. I am not trying to be harsh or mean to anybody, but I have little sympathy for those who willfully break the law and then pout when they run into trouble for their illegal activities. Sorry if that sounds harsh, I just call ’em as I see ’em. And, in recent months I have heard this problem over and over again.
The other thing that seems very common when I get these inquiries is that the person will say that they let their visa expire months before (sometimes years before) and they don’t have any money. Their funds are so low that they cannot bring their visa up to current status! My friends, if you are in this situation, you are asking for serious trouble, and that trouble will find you if you don’t fix the problem.
In many of these conversations I have had with people who are overstaying in the country, they actually blame the Philippine Government for the predicament they are in. I really don’t understand that, it is not the Philippine Government who ignored their responsibilities. Fact is, the Philippine Government is very liberal in the terms of visas for staying long term in the Philippines. There is nobody to blame for being in this bind, other than yourself.
Listen in as I advise somebody who has gotten himself into this situation. Hopefully this will save some others from allowing themselves to get into this kind of trouble, because you should try to avoid it as much as possible.
