I love eating ripe jackfruit! Ripe jackfruit is one of the tastiest things I have ever eaten. Recently we had a potluck dinner at our home and we invited two couples both of which included an American husband and a Filipino wife. After dinner, the wives tried to give their husbands ripe jackfruit for dessert. I was surprised at the men’s reaction to the offer. One husband completely refused to taste the jackfruit and yelled at his wife to take it away as if she were pushing a duck egg, with a developed embryo inside, in his face. The other took a not even half-hearted nibble and stuck his tongue out as if what he had taste were vile and disgusting. I recognize that people have different taste buds and I am more of an adventurous eater than most, but I still feel that being willing to try different foods makes one’s life richer. To each their own though. I had eaten many pieces the night before and enjoyed it immensely. The other men said their primary objection to jackfruit was the texture. To me, jackfruit texture and taste are similar to Laffy Taffy only it is natural and healthy where Laffy Taffy is artificial and really bad for you. If you have not tried jackfruit I highly recommend it for taste and I have heard jackfruit is incredibly good for human health!
Describing the taste of jackfruit is difficult at best for a number of reasons. One reason it is hard to describe is the taste is unique. The ripe fruit is sweet. I saw online that some tried to describe the taste as a combination of pineapple, mango, and banana. I think that would be the most accurate description I read, but when you are describing one fruit as a combination of three fruits for me that means you have to try it to get what it tastes like. If I had to describe the taste of frog legs, I would say it taste like sweet chicken. If asked to describe the taste of rabbit, then I would have to say you have to taste it because rabbit tastes like rabbit. This is my favorite way to eat jackfruit. My wife cooks it in a stew with horseradish leaves and hunks of ginger root. It is a good side dish but is not sweet at all. The seeds which are huge, about the size of a large unshelled almond, are boiled. I came home from work one afternoon early to watch the big solar eclipse and my wife had boiled the jackfruit seeds. I popped one in my mouth and started to chew. Something wasn’t right. I then noticed the pile of jackfruit seed husks on the table. I realized my mistake. To eat them you peel off the shell first and the seeds taste almost exactly like lima beans. I am not overly fond of lima beans, but for some reason, I ate the seeds anyway just because I find them strange and it was a solar eclipse.
I have a nephew, American young adult, who posted on his Facebook page recently about how jackfruit is a superfood. He was curious where he could get jackfruit. My wife and I informed him that there is plenty of jackfruit growing in the Philippines. The first time I ate jackfruit was when a door-to-door jackfruit saleslady walked up to Mama’s House in Bohol and sold us some. I was blown away by the taste of the ripe jackfruit. I am not sure I believe all the superfood hype about jackfruit, but I do believe it is better to eat fruit than processed desserts. Jackfruit is high in the following: vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, carbohydrates, electrolytes, fiber, and protein. It also has no saturated fat or cholesterol, so it sounds pretty healthy to me. I am no nutritionist but eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables seems to be good for health to me.
Jackfruit is the world’s largest tree-borne fruit and it grows in tropical regions including the Philippines. They can weigh up to 100 lbs. The world’s largest fruit is the pumpkin the record pumpkin is over a ton, but they don’t grow on trees. If a couple of jackfruits fell from a tree and hit a person in the head, I don’t think they would feel the second jackfruit. The Jackfruit is the size of a very large beach ball or even larger and spikey. Small jackfruit may be close to spherical, but as they grow larger they become more oblong due to gravity. I discovered that it is believed to have originated in India, but I have a different theory. I think the aliens from space left somethings after they built The Pyramids. They left: platypuses, sunflowers, seahorses, tarsiers, and jackfruit.
Wrap it up; I’ll take it!
When the fruit is unripe it is green. When it is ripe it is yellow. People test to see if jackfruit is ripe by thumping it and listening for a dull thud the same method is used for checking the ripeness of watermelon. I guess with practice and trial and error people get good at knowing when to pick jackfruit. The one negative I have read is that jackfruit ripens/decays quickly once picked. The jackfruit I enjoyed recently was purchased here in the USA and I am sure it was picked green someplace tropical and shipped here. I strongly endorse the consumption of jackfruit, but if you don’t like it then that leaves more for me.
