Just a quick summary for those who haven’t heard. Almost 2 weeks ago, a bomb went off at the Roxas night market here in Davao, killing 14 people and injuring over 60 more. There were also more bomb threats, targeting malls, churches and even hospitals. Thankfully, there haven’t been any more. I heard that the Sunday after the bombing, most of the city looked deserted cause no one wanted to go out unless they absolutely had to.
A few days ago, the PNP managed to identify a suspect thanks to a couple of witnesses who survived the bombing. According to them, they saw a guy place a bag underneath a massage table (the night market also has massage services). There were also a couple of women who were eyed as suspects but I don’t know how they are involved. They haven’t caught him yet but they are pursuing him. According to the PNP chief, they know the identity and his place of hiding, seems like just a matter of time before he’ll be caught. They aren’t releasing the name of the suspect yet because of the ongoing manhunt, most likely scared that if they do release his name, he’ll flee to another country or something.
They also stated that the bombing is most likely linked to the illegal drug trade, and the identity of the suspect further supported the theory. Catching this guy could really help in the war against drugs here, maybe identifying big players in the trade and their locations, or where they get the drugs, whether it’s imported illegally or manufactured here.
In addition to the suspect being identified, there were also 3 people arrested for making bomb jokes. Apparently, after the bombing, a lot of people started prank calling, joking about bombs and spreading rumors about bomb threats. Of course, this would cause a lot of confusion and has even forced a few schools to evacuate because of a false bomb threat. This should serve as a warning to anyone else making prank calls and spreading false rumors to stop, it’s completely unnecessary and very idiotic to do these things. This really reminds me of the swatting cases in the States, basically, people would call the police and say there’s an emergency (like a kidnapping or something) at a live streamers house or place of business, the police send SWAT units there and arrest the streamers while they are live. Thankfully, I don’t think anyone has been shot or killed in these “pranks”, but several of the people who did this have been arrested and some are even spending time in prison. The situation is very similar, someone thinking it’s “funny” to endanger people’s lives for a couple minutes of “fun”. I’m glad they are being arrested and hope they stop. As the saying goes, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
Anyway, I hope they catch this guy soon and also that he has some info on the drug operations here. I’m sure they’re working really hard on it, especially now that there’s a known connection to the drugs, which has been a problem here for a long time.
