Today I am writing about my desire to attempt to gather information on housing in the Philippines. Since the Government here has seen fit to slowly process our paperwork for permanent resident status, thereby “pausing” our continuation of citizenship, I decided to spend some time trying to locate housing in the Philippines. Obviously, this is just a recon mission to be used later for determining if the old kano is getting ripped off on a rental once we do arrive in the PI. But, I seem to have run into more roadblocks.
Now, I’ve been married to my wife for three years, and have been around Filipinas since just before I flew there in 2009. I know that their word of mouth travels faster than superman! So, why is it so difficult for me to get information on house rentals, land for sale, etc.? It seems like they(the family of my wife) would be able to simply ask a few people about houses for rent, or land for sale and they could report back any information that they find.
So, why the problem? I’m not sure. But the prices of land goes up about 25% once they know who it is for. Seriously? Is this what I have waiting for me in the PI? I won’t be able to even go to look at the house I might be interested in renting until my wife and or her family has negotiated terms? This does not appeal to me at all, and I have to say that it is more than a little frustrating. Now, I know that everyone in the PI think that all Americans are rich, but I’m certainly not. So, how am I going to go about finding a place to live? I simply don’t know.
I’ve thought about possibilities like driving around and looking for signs on homes for rent, or whatever other means of renting homes is used, and then having my wife call and check on a price, and then arrange a showing of the home. I’ve thought about finding a good Realtor that also deals in rentals (I don’t even know if they exist in the PI). So, this article, is really a way for me to simply state my trials and tribulations in finding a home or land for sale or rent, and asking the good readers in the PI to give some information to me.
Searching for something like this from abroad is certainly no easy or fun task. I did learn something today while reading and article by Paul Thompson about “The New Guy” thing… resist the temptation to buy a owner jeep! Now, I’d really like some tips from you all over there on how to look for a place to rent, or maybe some land to buy.
Can anybody there help me out?
Until next week, paalam, ingat, and God bless.
