When I first took over the Dive Shop in the late 90’s it was called White Tip Divers Gen San. This Name came about as it was affiliated to White Tip Divers in Manila, a main supplier of SCUBA gear throughout the country. When I took over the business I dropped the White Tip name as they only wanted me to sell their equipment exclusively but there were better deals around from other suppliers so I decided to get my supplies from who ever I wanted to and also who gave me the best deals.
The new name I decided upon was Tuna City SCUBA Center which fitted well into the City with it being called the Tuna Capitol of the Philippines and everyone was happy with the name. When we carried out our Sarangani Bay 5,000 Artificial Reef Dome Deployment Project and all seemed well with the new name but I must have upset someone down the line (which is not unusual for me) so when it came to the new registration I was told that the Tuna City name was only to be used with Official City Units!
OK, I had lost the Dive Shop name again but this was not too bad as the Cambridge Farm Book Keeper suggested that we just attach the Dive Shop to the Hotel which we did so it became Cambridge Dive Center, a name that I thought that we could keep but once again I was proved wrong! When we actually closed down the hotel we were told that the name could not be used as the name was also closed down so we had to think of another way to get a new name!
I wanted to get the new Dive shop in my name but unfortunately because I am a foreigner I would have to become a foreign investor and go through all kinds of expensive processes in order to actually own the business outright. There was also a reason that my wife Ellie could not be the owner so we decided to ask our daughter in England if she would be the official owner which she agreed to, that’s why the Dive Shop is called Agatha’s Dive Center. Agatha was the last choice on a list of 6 names which we passed to the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) and they chose the last choice which is actually the middle name of the owner! Now we are on the 4th name for the Dive Shop and I hope the last as we had to get all the Business Paper Work Changed, New Official Receipts and other stuff but we are totally legal once again!
I just bought a new Air Compressor 2 years ago and my Starex Van is in good condition but in the last few months the diving has been very slow, I am ready to go but the local divers tell me that it’s TOO HOT TO DIVE! I find that very strange But if that’s there choice then there is nothing I can do to change their minds!
