A couple weeks ago, me and my parents were talking about the traffic here. I mentioned a couple things that they were surprised about. One was that I-205 gets a lot of traffic now, my grandma even said that when she picked me up back in October, she had to leave her house really early because it took a couple hours to get to the airport. They were surprised because I-205 used to have less traffic when they lived here compared to I-5. Even since a couple years back when I was here last, the amount of traffic has increased noticeably.
I’m not sure if being in a different area compared to last time has anything to do with it, but it seems like there are a lot more vehicles on the roads here. A couple years ago, I went to a driving school, so we were out of the house almost everyday for about a month and in that time, I don’t think we ever really hit any major traffic on the way to the class or on the way back. This time around, while we haven’t been out of the house everyday, when we do go out, there is usually some traffic we end up in. It could have something to do with the weather. A few weeks ago, we did have a lot of snow and freezing rain, so now that that’s gone, more people are bound to be out and about. One problem with people driving after a change in the weather though is that they tend to forget that a change in weather means a change in road conditions, this was a problem the last time I was here. After weeks of constant sunshine, it finally started to rain, and for some strange reason there were a bunch of wrecks around that time, i even saw one on the way to driver’s ed, lol. I know we were out as soon as the roads were good enough to drive on, so a lot of people probably had the same idea. Another reason that I’ve heard quite often is that a lot of people are moving here from other states, particularly California.
My grandma actually brought up a point that I hadn’t thought of before. She said that California drivers are a lot more courteous than drivers from our area. At first I thought that didn’t make sense, California traffic was kinda chaotic, reminded me a bit of traffic in the Philippines. After she explained it though, it made a lot more sense. She said that because California drivers are used to the chaos and aren’t as strict on the traffic laws, people don’t care if someone makes a mistake or something like that. Meanwhile, drivers here are used to everyone following the laws, so when someone makes a mistake, they tend to be far less considerate about it. Again, it reminds me of the Philippines, people don’t care if someone makes a mistake or disregards a law or tow because they know that they also do the same.
