Have you ever heard the nursery rhyme “Rain Rain, Go Away”? Well, I have a theory that all that rain people are wishing would go away ends up here in the Pacific Northwest. For the past couple weeks it’s been raining non-stop. I’m not the type who hates rain, actually the opposite, I love rain, but there are a few things I don’t like about the rain here.
In the Philippines, most of the time, when it rains, it rains hard. You could hear it hit the ground, you could hear it beating on roofs and sometimes, it’d cause flooding in certain areas. I remember walking home in the rain a few times because I loved it, it gave me a sense of calmness. A nice long shower after said walk to top it off made for a nice end to a school day. The smell of wet earth after a few hot days was also good. I remember my teacher telling us that that could cause us to get sick, but I still liked it. Rain also meant that we’d have a nice cool night, ideal sleeping conditions, lol. Here though, the atmosphere of the rain is different. What they call “heavy rain” is a drizzle at best for me. I don’t hear the nice pitter-patter of the rain hitting the roof, or the nice muffled sound of it hitting the ground. It’s just silent.
The few sunny days we get here in the Pacific Northwest are pretty good. With the days drawing out, more sun is always good. Now, it won’t get dark outside until about 7pm, which kinda messes me up since I’m used to telling when to eat dinner and when it’s getting kinda late by the light outside. I’d usually think “Oh, I still have a lot of time before dinner” then when I look at the clock, I see that it’s 7 something. There’s a park fairly close to where I live, about a 5 minute walk, and when it’s sunny there’s always a good amount of people there with kids playing soccer or whatever. When it rains though, the whole place gets really muddy and I don’t like to walk through it then. The last time I was here, the weather was pretty bipolar with a few days of rain and a few sunny ones. Now it seems like for every week for rain we might get a day of sun. In the Philippines, it’s pretty easy to tell when it’s gonna rain. Most of the time, if it’s been a really hot day, you might get a rainy night. A few days of heat though, and you’re bound to get a nice rainy day at some point. I remember a friend of mine telling me that if the sky looks a bit red during the night, it’s gonna rain. I’ve noticed it ever since and he’s been right 100% of the time.
Anyway, just some thoughts on rain this week because it’s been raining a lot here. Now I’m just hoping we get a nice heavy shower at some point.
