A BRIT ABROAD

Unlike most of you guys I am a Brit here in the Philippines and sometimes when I watch the so called TV and listen to the radio and even reading the newspapers I could imagine what its like to be in America.

In fact when I first landed at Manila airport I was shocked as I could hear these hundreds of what to me sound like American voices coming from everyone, even a lot of the spelling is in American English. Of course now I understand following the American rule, but it was an unexpected shock to me and even more of a shock was that my British accent met with glazed eyes and even bigger smiles.

Klaus mentioned that TV here is of a poor level, well forgive me for saying but in the main we Europeans find the USA TV not totally to our tastes.

Now programmes like 24 are the best in the world and HOUSE (British actor) show the world that some TV is fantastic, but far and few between but thanks to my friend Bob,(yes Mr Blog himself) I managed to download many programmes from the UK that had just been transmitted. Also thanks to the BBC websites I can watch video podcast of many programmes and even watch News live from the UK feed and watch old news programmes too.

I even can listen to every UK radio station live through the net, and I can even listen back up to seven days on most programmes so I can hear them back at convenient time.

My point being we are very lucky to make these moves across thousands of miles and still be able to hold on to some of the things that originate from our home lands thanks to this terrific technology. I even speak to my mum cheaper by SKYPE then when i lived in the UK. And that’s important as she never stops talking but when i explain that i am talking to her through my PC not a phone she reply’s “Don’t be silly, do you think im stupid i know your on a phone” I never try to explain anymore.

    Jon:
You said “we Europeans find the USA TV not totally to our tastes.”
Well I guess it could also be said that there is little taste to British TV.

Nothing beats Philippine Television programming. Nothing! Watching Lupin talking care of the bad guys…just sends shivers down my spine!
You brits should be ashamed of yourselves, producing such second-rate spies as 007.

    Hi John,

Mr. Bean is my favorite! I also watch “As Time Goes By” and “Keeping Up Appearances” on PBS from time to time. I enjoy these shows!

Benny Hill will always be my favorite Brit showman of all time. His female TV showcrew were the subject of my childhood fantasies.

Hey John - sounds like a few Americans and Filipinos are fans of British TV! That should make you quite happy, right?

I must confess - I lived in metro London 1975-1977 and 1979-1982, and got to see a lot of great shows on the three channels (BBC1, BBC2 & ITV). Know there are more channels now, but believe they only brought junk to the airwaves. Would give me second thoughts about buying my TV license at the BPO (either “colour” or black & white  ).

My favorite celebrity: Dr. Magnus Pike!

hello John, i’m married to a British guy and i do love a lot of the shows he loves watching like The Office; but i have a hard time understanding the humor behind Little Britain. I think I’m more into stuff like Coupling or Dr. Who. And there’s this one show, Cold Feet, but I think only girls can tolerate that…
