NO RICE!
I have to say that one of the things that I am unable yet to consume is gallons of rice. Now in the UK i would have rice with curry and again on a few other occassions, but to eat it five times a day makes me shudder, especialy when considering the normal standards of rice available to most of the population here.
A good friend of mine has been suffering with bad stomach problems and I have helped him out with a few medical bills, the fact he has no money makes it difficult to keep him well. It looks like in his twenties he is already showing signs of Diabetese, so like a good friend I sat down with him to go through a more healathy diet. Cut down on the rice, cut down on sugar products etc, etc.
His eyes began to cry as he told me the nly food in house everyday is RICE, and everything he eats has high sugar conent so it stays fresh longer.
He has no family, no job but a heart of gold and stays clean presntable and proud evryday..I SO ADMIRE HIM FOR THAT.
Biting my lip for my stupidity I asked him if he would help cook me a meal two to three times a week for which he would be paid in joining me for the food, BUT NO RICE, he was in my new house the next day organising the kitchen and his first attempt to cook western food was very good indeed.
Because of his lack of money this was the only way to get him a little better food and it also helps me too, he also with my help should have a new job next week too. Thats a RICE i mean NICE ending.

Hi John - Your friend should be very appreciative of the opportunities that you have given him! Good luck to him on the job, and I hope he enjoys those healthy meals that you are providing for him!
John,
I know what you mean about rice. As Bob has said in the past and I see here Filipinos eat rice as a staple. I feel because of the culture and all the poverty rice is cheap and fills ths stomach.
At meals, if I eat rice it is maybe a cup, not a plateful.
I have also told the family we will have vegtables at every meal and they are expected to eat their share. With so many here low in potasium and Iron, we eat a lot of leafy green vegies, also asparagas often too.
The only meal I have probles with is breakfast. Sometimes it consists of rice and last dinners leftovers. I need eggs or somethimg lighter, not Adobo.
If they make that I just have some oatmeal.
Nice to hear again how you are so nice to your friends.
Hi john sorry i did not toget to meetyou last week with Bob and Feyma. good luck in varing tour friends diet.
You have a heart of gold too John for extending your help to him. God bless you.
John, you are incredible…
I have a problem with eczema on my feet, been there for years… so my wife, Dr. Venice ya know, cut me off from chicken, eggs, shrimp and crabs. Well the shrimp and crabs I don’t care about too much but not my beloved eggs and chicken! Well I can say after following this diet for a month now there is no improvement in my condition. What does this have to do with rice? Well I’m sick of eating pork all the time and I love fish but hate picking all the damn bones out. So I fill my plate with rice, douse it with toyo or hot sauce or whatever and eat hearty. Guess I’m getting used to the rice thing over here.
thats a really ‘RICE’ ending!! thanks again, John!
Some people say us foreigners should mind our own business and let the Philippino eat rice the way he wants to. I say sure, it’s OKAY. But I feel that a bit of education and and some imagination goes a long way when the preparation of rice is concerned. For many many months I looked at my plate of boiled rice ( and dried fish ) and said ” oh no not rice again “. Lucky for me I actually like rice a lot. But everyday, boiled rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner just didn’t cut the mustard. So I thought there must be more ways to boil rice to make it nice. So hold on to your hats Philippines, I’m coming back soon to bring you delights from the west that will make your mouth water………….
