Philippine-German Relations (IX)

Following the chronology of the 1970s we have to mark the organization of the German-Philippine Association in Mainz/West Germany in 1970. The Philippine-German Association, mainly for business people, was organized with the former Philippine Ambassador to Germany Melchor Aquino.

Martial Law was proclaimed in the Philippines on September 21, 1972. On July 3, 1974 the Laurel-Langley Agreement was terminated. The Philippines started seeking ties with Socialist and Communist countries.

On March 13, 1975 we marked the arrival of the newly-repaired Bamboo Organ from West Germany in Manila, which I reminds me to write more about Philippine-German Cultural Relations next time on this blog.

West Germany stopped employment of Filipino nurses, medical technologists and midwives in 1976. Background: a new growing “alien-hostility” coming from some “right-wing organisations”. The German government mentioned “other reasons”.

Good news in 1977: The inauguration of the newly-transfereed Goethe-Institut (German Cultural Center) in Quezon City, Metro Manila, with Imelda Marcos as Guest of Honor.
