Loving our Politicians? Really?

“Though often maligned these days and at times sweetly deserving it, politicians just same need to be loved by all of us. And yes, at all times, not only from time to time!” This is an excerpt of a Guest Editorial of a Catholic priest in a daily five years ago. I kept it. And I must say, nothing changed. So far, so good.

Okay. I am sure I was brought up as a Christian, and I spent my life in a Christian way. I was blessed by being able to visit more then 60 countries worldwide during my life. I was able to meet many politicians, who belonged to many different ideologies. I am blessed also to have some politicians as good or even very good friends here in the Philippines. I know that they are also stopping by this blog and the whole LiP magazine for ex pats.

To be honest: I love these politicians, who do their job for their people’s and countries’ advantages. We have to see, that politicians play an important and indispensable party in our life. I know, there are pros and contras. Actually I was inspired to post this article after joining again the Philippine Congress Meeting last night regarding the new speaker. Don’t worry, I will not bore you with details. Look around the world and into the historical past and count how many buffoons and harlequins have been longing to get a politician  position - and GOT IT. Chaos or disorder, no peace and harmony and  a society like a headless chicken are or have been many times the main reasons through incompetent and incapable politicial (AND OTHER!) leaders., who just shine/d because of inability.

There is no difference between a corrupt district officer or a real dictator and his administration that use their people as cannon fodder while washing their hands of it in dirty innocence. Don’t worry, I really will not bore you.

Loving our politicians? Yes, why not? Thanks god, there are still some who have integrity and competence, and they know what common good is and what the basic social principles are.

I met plenty unsusceptible people in my surroundings during the last weeks. Sometimes I got tired, but while writing this piece, I feel, all those meetings have been valuable. We should try to pray, that we might find more real politicians (worldwide!), who anyhow can credit themselves with success in being familiar with the advantages and disadvantages of different ideologies.

I tried to explain my standpoint from the philosophically and religious view - not discussing with a case of beer under my table… .

Hebrews 13:17 says, “Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage for you!”

  1. Hi Klaus,
There is one issue that I must disagree with you on and that is mixing philosophy, religious views and the bible together. You might be able to mix philosophy and religious views together because when it comes down to it that is all they are “is a view”, just like the theory of evolution is just a “theory”. When it comes to the bible it is the divine inspired word of God and the divine inspired word of God can not be mixed with any worldly interpretation.
I’m not saying that I disagree with you as regarding “obeying those that have the rule over you (King James version)” Colossians 2:8 says: Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

  2. Hi Richard, I agree with you. I also didn’t mean to mix the word of God with wordly interpretations. I just like to add from time to time a bible quotation, because it’s also the “book of my life”. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

  3. It is interesting to note that the writer of Hebrews wrote those words at a time when the leaders of Rome were hostile and very cruel to Christians. Paul wrote during this same time period that we are to pray for our national leaders and show them respect. Love them? Maybe as friends, or sometimes in the way we are to love our enemies, as commanded by Christ. But we should definitely pray for them and show them respect, that is clear, and obey the laws, unless they are contrary to God’s laws (as in the case of Daniel and his friends).

  4. Hi American Lola, thanks for stopping by. Yeah, I would agree with you, and, to be honest you found a good (better) explanation: We should love them as friends, pray for them and show respect.
