Do you like Pinoy Music?

Everybody is talking about Karaoke these days. Watch out also Migs’ blog. How about Philippine music? What I mean - not (only) in the Karaoke Bar. There are a lot of great Philippino singers - and to be honest: a lot of Philippino music touches my heart.

When I was radio host I used to play a lot of Pinoy music requests. Step by step I add also more CD’s to my private collection. The great guitar player Cesar Manalili belongs to them as well as Pinoy Classic composed by the unique Buencamino.

How about you? Are you ex pat and did you start liking (or even loving) Pinoy Music? Who are you favourites? Or do you still prefer your home country music?

Hi Klaus - As a “future ex-pat,” I can say that Ilocono music figures prominently in our music library. While it’s a little hard to find here in the States, our baggage from return trips usually include new CDs that we picked up. We also link to internet radio sites that play Pinoy music.

As for favorites: Outside of all-time great Pilita Corrales, we’re sort of biased toward the Harry Corpus Singers (Ilocanos) - one of the featured female voices belongs to our cousin Desiree Dancel! Family na family.

    Hi Klaus,
I haven’t heard a lot of Pinoy music yet, but what I have heard of Mindanao’s very own Joey Ayala music I quite like, and especially when he adds ethnic instruments. So one of the things when I arrive is to hear the traditional music of Mindanao.

Hi Richard, thanks for stopping by. Yeah, I also like the music from all ethnic parts of the Philippines up to its pop singers or even pianists like the great Willi Cruz, also playing pieces such as Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang…

Hi Klaus and Bob - I’m a fan of Jose Mari Chan too. I saw his concert in CDO in 2006 and even managed to get an autograph. He sounded just the same as when I started listening to him back in the 1970s. I like the Apo Hiking Society and also Pilita Corales’ songs in Bisaya.

Hi Klaus: I suggest you heed the advice of the above commenters - Jose Mari Chan. If you prefer independent and contemporary, try Up Dharma Down or Cynthia Alexander. Oh, but there are so many other artists!

By the way, next time I fly to Davao, I promise to meet you and all other LIP columnists living there. (Can I take you to a karaoke bar?)

Hi Marilou, wow, great, you got an autograph. The Apo Hiking Society performed also in Davao City a couple of months ago if I correctly remember. Yeah, great artists also. To be honest: Pilita was and is still one of my favourites too. Thanks for stopping by Marilou.

Hi Migs, of course Jose Mari Chan!!! With Up Dharma Down and Cynthia Alexander I am not so familiarized. Maybe you can help me, if you are here in Davao. SUre, we will all meet - if you want also in a Karaoke Bar. But I tell you honestly, I can’t sing and I don’t want all the other guests leaving the bar
