Got all the breaks?

Why do some people seem to “get all the breaks”, and, why do some people drudge without getting the slightest gleam of hope? It is really only a stupid or unresponsive accidental fortune?

Fact is, lucky people take calculated risks to enter some business or enterprise. Lucky people keep on working on themselves for a new or another career, changing jobs or just trying to improve themselves. Then they are really prepared for their breaks and capitalization on a good future. Also as ex pat living in the Philippines… .

Calculated risks? Yes, because lucky people know the difference between risky and rash, between an informed hunch and a vain hope. The US-lyricist Robert Frost (1875-1963) noted, “All the best things a poet ever use are things he didn’t know he was getting, when he was getting them!”

If we want to get all the breaks, of even some only in between, we must realize first, that it is not only a matter of chance, how lucky people get that way. We can learn to turn problems into a fit or convenient time by taking second looks at things others see at first time. We can learn how to break off. Being stubborn, out of ego, ignorant, not knowing when to cut losses or change course are all things, which didn’t allow us to get all these breaks.

We can learn how to butt our heads against a wall or to realize that this more important to look at the wall for or of broken stones, cracks - or maybe a hidden gate. Maybe there is the luck at the door… - And, you might start reading this column again from the beginning… .

Of course, we also should learn to spell ‘luck’ as W-O-R-K. Nothing doing is really one of the hardest lessons to grasp. Think about it, if you stay here as an ex pat or if you plan to do so. Some people only enjoy the fruits and have unfortunately no idea what it takes to plant and water the trees.

“The secrets of success are neither deep nor dar.” as British poet Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) stressed. Giving everything in every note we sing might allow us to get and enjoy all the breaks one day soon in future.

What was your idea of a memorable vacation last Holy Week? No question: last week the Philippine nation slowed down. It was, once more, for me, the time to recollect, to relax and to rethink many things. Being in a not satisfied health condition, I enjoyed taking all the breaks and the time with families and loved ones and those, who even sent me a simple and meaningful text message that strengthens relationships with one and another. I saluted to those people, who were not able to rest and relax during the past days because of their jobs and business.

  1. I believe that the only luck is what one makes for himself. In other words, it is not luck at all.

  2. It’s not luck at all - of course…

  3. Actually, all of us wanted to have that break from which perspective side of our lives… being a Filipino has its side for a break, I’m talking here some of the Filipinos, seems opportunity are indefinitely hard to achieve. Even to across few miles to the neighboring island for a vacation maybe but its still a contrary to one’s mind, spending money there rather staying in do churches and plaza. Why? it’s better to hold some few buck for the rainy season, but why still then savings but seems hard for extra trip? that goes now to the economy people were facing …

Foreigners, like you maybe Klaus, has all the opportunity in life, one is that you been in travel and you ended up here in the Philippines … don’t you think that you’ve given Filipinos a break? YES, you have, we weren’t able to Germany to meet Germans but visiting us and staying with us is a Big one felt of a Luck, and that goes on to one’s opportunity that we wanted to have by given your unselfish love to one of our kind.

Your luck is the opportunity for others, I admire you for that and to those others who you called expats … Your opportunity that you have inherited from your country gives luck to citizens of the third world, no wonder we love you more because you’ve seen what we are looking for.

  4. Klaus.

Luck has a part its meeting the right people and being in the write place, but more than that its having your eyes and ears open. Sorry to say I have been guilty of burying my head in the sand in the past.

  5. Here´s one thought about “good luck” that I fully agree with:

“I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more luck I have”. — Thomas Jefferson

  6. Hi Klaus,

Yes, we all wonder when the Lady Luck is ever going to come by or at least swing by in our neighborhood. One thing I’ve learned in life, is never to give up my ‘dreams’. It may take a long time to manifest but ” She” always delivers my request when I am ready to handle the responsibilies attached to my request - hard work, long hours, etc. And, to never be afraid to reach out for help or learn something new.

When I arrived the US in 1976, I had to work for a tailor shop. I was determined to have my own business so I didn’t have to work for anyone. I saved every paycheck and bought a sewing machine when I had enough saved up. After a year and a half, I opened my own tailor/alteration shop, one of the first woman owned in our neighborhood. The affluent ladies loved the idea of having a woman instead of a man  doing a fitting on them. After 5 years, I sold it and invested the money on a metaphysical bookshop and giftshop which I kept for almost 20 years. Yes, lots of work were required of me but I believe in…

Now, it’s time for me to slow down and share my stories to those who would listen.

    Cheers!

  7. Hi MeLL, thank you very much for your kind words and your very thoughtful comment. Sure, I got the chances to travel to more then 60 countries, but my heart told me to stop in the Philippines. I was lucky to find many wonderful people here in this country. Only with their help and support I worked hard, got success and take some breaks in between. I know Filipinos, who can’t afford even the small ferryboat trip to visit relatives and friends. Thank you for admiring me, I admire people like you too. No wonder, that I left my heart in the Philippines…

  8. Hi John, that’s exactly what I mean. You can work hard but success is there, if you really keep your eyes and ears open - AND of course meet the right people at the right place and time…Burying the head in the sand of the past is indeed terrible. Even my Grandma always told me to look into the future and meet the right people. And then you will enjoy working hard because you can count your blessings and your money.

  9. Hi I.M. Schneider, thanks for stopping by. Are you a Filipina married to a German? It’s nice to see “new faces” here. Thanks for the wonderful quotation. I fully agree with it.

  10. Hi MarcelinaWW, thank you very much for sharing your story with all of us. Yeah, we always should have our dreams, without dreams no desire and no ideas for the future. Sure, lots of work you did, but see, what you have now? Sure, slow down from time to time, that’s also what I am trying to explain. And isn’t it wonderful, if other listen our stories??? Again THANKS marcelina and god bless!
