Are you angry today?

Maybe, you are angry right now while reading this post. You are angry, even this is a beautiful day. You are angry? It’s okay. We are all battling against one of the most powerful emotions known to man - anger!

Anger. For many people a day really goes by without feeling angry. It is not necessary to cite examples, I think. Sometimes, it’s just a minor reason like we hate the fly on the wall and hurt people around us. Or, did they hurt us???

Anger is a main part of our daily life, that’s why it’s really important to talk about this phenomenon. What is anger, what does it do and how does it affect our life? Where does it come from and how can we learn to handle it in a constructive instead destructive way? Only when the roots of our anger are exposed and explained can we defuse its explosive and dangerous potentials.

Anger can be with us every day. I am against people in the Philippines, who are still burning plastic and rubber. Many of us are angry because of some politicians who continue making unbelievable promises and blue-eyed statements. I am still angry with some leaders, who really didn’t understand the consequences of an uncontrolled global population growth. I am angry because of some very special slowly going on processes in my life. I am sure, every one of you has his own reasons being angry…

Anger is a hostile emotion that sets people against one and another, or even against themselves. by its nature, anger involves opposition, hostility, hatred and dislike. Emotions of antagonism can take on a wide variety of faces. Expressions of anger range from the overt, in-your-face brand of open hostility to the cold indifference of a silent individual, who promised before a big help… .

At times, anger can be felt like an inner fire. It hits you in the gut. You see red and feel hot and maybe sweaty. Your stomach gives you problems, your breathing rate increases and your blood pressure rises. Your nostrils may flare, and your jaw tightens, your blood is boiling… .

Three days before my birthday last week, I got the second (mild) stroke - because of anger. I was rescued by a 55-years old lady, who is still taking care of me and teaches me, how to delete to much anger. I am still recovering… .

Hi Klaus - I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. Maybe you should take some time off and go to Samal to relax. I know that you like it there a lot.

Take care of yourself, my friend.

Soaking in a nice warm Jacuzzi, a good full body massage then… a candlelit dinner with a glass of red wine with Rose while a relaxing music is playing in the background could be just a perfect prescription for this, Klaus.

On a serious note, I believe anger can be a breakthrough to get us out of complacency, or our comfort zone. I’m glad you’re voicing it out. Me? I clean my house thoroughly when I get angry. But lately, my house has not been as “spic and span” as it used to be. What I can say…
    Cheers!

I have had a struggle with letting anger overcome me for a number of years. (I am about the age of the lady that helped you.) I have had to make a conscious effort to count my blessings while letting God settle scores. My long-term health has become much more valuable. Even when my anger resulted in the result that I thought I wanted, I was still left with some anxiety. Your article today helps to remind me to approach life from the perspective of what is important, rather than what is urgent. While not involved in 12 step groups, I still like the serenity prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Like some of the others have mentioned on LIP, I especially enjoy the different perspectives of people from various countries and cultures. Though only recently having discovered LIP, I look forward to reading every day and have enjoyed your posts. Halten Sie sich die gute Arbeit P.S. I spent two years in Germany in the Army in the 70’s and have very fond memories of your country and the wonderful German people.

    Hi Klaus,

Sorry to hear about your stroke. Hope you have a fast recovery!

If I feel myself getting angry inside about something or someone I remember this little saying:

” If a problem can be solved, why be angry. If a problem can’t be solved, what’s the point in getting angry.”

Take it easy and best wishes!

  10. Klaus on August 8th, 2008 12:35 pm

Hi Malcolm, thanks for your concern and for your nice words in perfect German.Regards to you and your family in England…

Hi Jocely Green, also to you a big thanks for your concern and for your good wishes. Yeah, I can understand also your anger… It seems that neighbours sometimes are making us the biggest problems… i WISH YOU ALSO GOOD LUCK - and as you said ‘lets relax’… take care…

  13. Klaus on August 8th, 2008 12:45 pm

Hi Bob, my dear friend, thanks very much for your concern. Yeah, you have given me a great idea… I sure, very soon my topic will be “OFF FOR SAMAL”…

  14. Klaus on August 8th, 2008 12:52 pm

Hi Marcelina, wow, a very good prescription, but the warm jacuzzi would work better in Germany. Anyway, I got more then one massage from this lady. Try to read the related post “Miracles or Charlatanry?” Then you know, that I have a lot of experiences in the Philippines since more then 20 years.

Cleaning the house? Mmh - I heard a lot of such answers. Gardening, work out… Good, that every one has his or her own receipt.

Yeah, I really liked to voice it out. It helps also… THANKS MARCELINA for stopping by…

  15. Klaus on August 8th, 2008 12:53 pm

Hi Cidy, guten Tag! Thanks for your concern. Yeah, I can feel already a big improvement… I am sure I will keep on “shining”…

  17. Klaus on August 8th, 2008 1:05 pm

Hi R.L.Graham, thanks for stopping by and for sharing your impressive thoughts with all of us. You are giving a lot of very good advices.I like your serenity prayer, because it’s very helpful. Thank you also for your praises regarding LiP. I am sure, you will enjoy reading it also in future. Another BIG THANKS to you for your comment regarding Germany and its people. I can “give it back’ to you, because we felt the same while living in West Berlin, in the American Sector more then 20 years. We got very good friends in the US-army, especially when my wife worked as clerk in the book store STARS AND STRIPES in the US-airbase in Berlin-Tempelhof…

Hi Randall Jessup, thanks a lot for dropping by and for this little but important saying. Yeah I will relax and take it easy. I learned that a stroke is a warning…

Hello Klaus- Hey its perfectly fine to get angry, as I see it ,its just a temporary state of insanity. However, what is not good is to react in such a manner that harm is done to ourselves and our love ones.

Take a moment to reflect that tomorrow is another day in paradise and we do have some degree of control to start the day anew in a more positive light.Sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well.I hope you feel better and stronger with each passing day.

Watch the Olympics and enjoy a warm bowl of chicken soup.

  20. Klaus on August 9th, 2008 2:41 pm

Hi Julius, great and thoughtful comment. THANKS a lot for it. yeah, you are so very right. Another day in paradise… Thanks god, I am getting better day after day… Wow, I was able to enjoy a chicken soup today, and I can tell you, it works…

    Hi Klaus!

Thank you for recommending me to read “Miracles or Charlatanry” Great discussion and exchange of wits! I’m more like in the side of Angie and Clay. I grow a variety of medicinal and culinary herbs in my backyard for our personal use. Yes, Faith Healing is in my family tradition as well. Not quack doctors as clearly explained by Angie.

    Thanks again!

  22. john on August 10th, 2008 12:56 pm

My friend use the power of your anger to make it the power of recovery, as we all need you well and back to normal as soon as possible.

  23. Klaus on August 11th, 2008 1:11 pm

Hi MarcelinaWW, thanks for dropping by again and for reading the other post. Like before I also love to agree with Angie and Clay. of course, no quack doctors…

  24. Klaus on August 11th, 2008 1:12 pm

Hi John, thanks for your comment, my friend. Don’t worry, I am on the right path already…

    Klaus,

I’m a late well-wisher for your birthday but what can I say, better late than *later*!!! LOL. So happy, happy birthday, Klaus. And no more getting angry if it negatively impacts your health. Okay? Hope you are on your way to full recovery. That means feeling the wide array of emotions but less so of anger nowadays.

I agree, anger can be positive but only in quick spurts, only if it spurs us to action. Never let it linger… It is devastating otherwise, as it triggers the stress hormones to flood our bodies… Not good…

Over a year ago, I started a very regimented program of Tai Chi and I’ve wondered why I didn’t look into it sooner. It is the most centering activity I’ve indulged in. As others claim, it’s a moving form of meditation. And when I watched the Olympics opening ceremonies on Friday night, 08/08, where thousands did a segment on Tai Chi in carefully orchestrated moves, my feelings about Tai Chi were really validated. I was mesmerized watching them!!! (I got into Tai Chi because it was recommended by my health care facility, for stress reduction.) I wonder if it is popular in the Philippines also?

Finally, I enjoyed R.L. Graham’s comments. When I read them, I thought I was listening to “myself.” I’m very much in sync with what R.L. wrote.

    Be well, my friend.

Hi Ecstasy, thanks a lot (maraming maraming salamat) for your birthday wishes. Sure, better late then never. And sure again, I am watching very much my health now, because I still have many things to do and many plans. I just turned 55, bata ko…  . I have heard about Tai Chi. I haven’t try it yet. Yeah, I also enjoyed R.L. Graham’s comment.

A Rotary friend texted me this morning: Happy thoughts remove life’s pressures. They have healing powers that uplift the spirit and lead to a blissful life. Think happy. Be at peace…

    hello mr. klaus,

“lookin forward for your fast recovery”…

    just a short reminder,mr. klaus….

“Holding on to anger, resentment and hurt only gives you tense muscles, a headache and a sore jaw from clenching your teeth. Forgiveness gives you back the laughter and the lightness in your life.”
-Joan Lunden, in Healthy Living Magazine.

Hold not to anger.. and if it still bothers you, remember this “When anger rises, think of the consequences”…… adios!!!

  28. Klaus on August 13th, 2008 12:55 pm

Hi Charles A., thanks for looking forward for my fast recovery. I am really in good hands. I also like to thank you for the very nice quote of Joan Lunden. Hey, actually this could inspire me for another post, but maybe next time…Sure, I always think about the consequences, that’s why I feel a recovery… THANKS for stopping by charles, and take care too…

OMG! You had a mild heart attack? I somehow cannot imagine you being angry because you’re always laughing in class. Please take it easy Sir. A friend once said that anger is an essential human emotion, but of course we shouldn’t let anger get the better of us no?
You have a nice page here Sir. Yes, I followed the link you’ve put on my page. Nah, that wasn’t spam. That’s what I call promotion. Ich sehe Sie am Freitag zum Deutschunterricht (I hope what I said was right hehehehe). Ciao!

  30. Klaus on August 14th, 2008 8:46 am

Hi Krishna, thanks for stopping by and danke schoen for the kind words. It was my second but mild stroke, and I hope also the last. Correct what your friend said… Yup, see you on Friday in school… The German sentence was 100% perfect - you are a really great student… CIAO!!
