Packing for a move overseas…
It is much more difficult than I thought it would be to let go of the things I have accumulated over the years. It’s funny how something that has not been brought out to look at or to even think about can suddenly bring back a flood of memories.
Yes, today we finally started a dedicated and swift plan that we are putting into high gear. Getting rid of things that we no longer want, need, or would be too much of a pain to move 8,000 miles to the west. I used to be a bit of a photography nut in the day, and took pictures of everything. That was back when it was on 35mm, and not digital. Thankfully, I have everything in digital form from about 2002, so it’s not too bad. However, there are a great number of pictures that I have found that mean nothing to me anymore(like friends building their first house, etc.) so I have one of two choices. Burn them, or give them to the friends that might enjoy them more than me. So, I’m giving them all notice of the pictures, and am offering them for free for their use or disposal. I figure, that way they aren’t wasted. Digital ones are going with me across the ocean to the Islands of the Philippines. 🙂
Other things, like awards, or pictures of graduating from my first police academy, will of course, be coming with me. I do need a man cave after all, so the walls can be adorned with that stuff. I found I have a lot more gun accessories than I had originally thought I had, and they’re all new! Apparently, I liked to buy stuff I didn’t need back in the day when I was young and dumb. So, while I have not yet thought of what to do with everything, we are working on it to get it down to as low amount of boxes as possible. There’s going to be a fire over here soon though, so watch the skies in the Philippines… you might be able to see it!!! Just kidding… the fire department will be on me like white on rice, in a glass of milk on a paper plate in a snow storm if I make one too big.
I’ve decided to rest for the night, but tomorrow we will go to the Philippines store for boxes and buy up some to get ourselves situated and see how many we will need. I’m hoping on using four for the plane, and no more than ten to be shipped. That’s $800 USD for the shipped boxes, and the airlines will only cost us an additional $80USD. I don’t think that’s bad for moving as far as we’re going, and I’m comfortable with that number.
Now for the big issue… can we get all the “stuff” we WANT into that number of boxes? Notice I say WANT. I do realize that there are a great number of things I WANT to bring with us, but I am aware that it might not be financially realistic for me to do so.
Today ends only the first REAL day for us looking into our things for packing. It is, for me at least, a real eye opener as to how much stuff we need to get rid of.
Day two of packing has commenced. Let me just say one thing about getting a lot of stuff into a small box… space bags!!! I bought some at a garage sale this past summer and was skeptical until about ten minutes ago. We stuffed eight large beach towels(great big fluffy ones) into one large sized bag and sucked out the air. Half, and I mean HALF as much space needed in the box for it now!! AMAZING! So, as I write this, I am preparing to find them online and buy more for all of our clothes, and all other linens. I think we’ll be able to save at least two boxes by using the bags. I hope they’re cheap!!
And so it begins!!
Until next time, paalam, ingat, and God bless!
