Property Ownership in the Philippines

A big discussion on this website over the years has been focused on whether it is best to buy property or rent property when living in the Philippines.  There are advocates for either side of the argument.

Foreigners are not allowed to own real property in the Philippines.  So, you cannot buy land here if you are not a Natural Born Philippine Citizen.  Now, if your spouse is a Filipino, then you can own a house here, although it will not be in your name, only in your spouses name.  That can present an entirely different set of problems, but does offer a potential solution.

Foreigners CAN, however, own a condo unit, so that is another thing to keep in mind.

On the other hand, rental prices are very reasonable in the Philippines, so you can often rent for less than buying.

The archived articles below explore the subject and will help you understand the dilemma.

If you are looking for property rent or to buy in the Philippines, you can check our Real Estate Section to find the property that is right for you.

House hunting… AGAIN

House hunting… AGAIN

My wife and I have been looking for a new home to rent. The one we live in now is ok, but it has some issues that, over time, cause us grief unnecessarily. The house we are currently renting is elevated due to being in a lower area. When it was built, rather than having […]

An Anniversary

This year marks a significant milestone for us.  Marlyn and I are half owners of a student boarding house in Bayombong, the provincial capital of Nueva Vizcaya.  We have now been in business for 10 years. Back in 2003, Marlyn, her sister, and brother-in-law were looking for a business investment in the Philippines.  They knew […]

Let’s Build A House

Let’s Build A House

I was out to sea most of the time while my house was being built so I didn’t see that much of the construction. Plus living here for over 20 years I never took the time to give it much attention until September 2014. That has opened my eyes. The roosters are gone next door, […]
