About a week ago, while playing video games with some friends, there was a sudden banging on our door. It was about 11 o’clock at night, so this was really unexpected and gave me quite a scare.
The house my Grandma and I live in is on a corner, and has a lot of big windows facing both streets. We also have some security cameras, and while one of them is positioned to cover the entry way, it doesn’t show the door, the rest show either the back or the driveway.
We immediately decided not to open our door for obvious reasons. The banging stopped after a short while, then suddenly started up again, but this time it was coming from the sides of the house. The room our computer is in faces both streets and has five big windows which I always shut and cover with blinds. The area they were banging on happened to be the window close to my computer.
Knocking on our door is one thing, but actually knocking on the side of the house? That made me really worried. I made sure all our doors were locked and took a small peek out the blinds of one of the other windows. What I saw was some kids being stupid hanging out around our house. There were probably 8 of them, all around 12-13 years old. They saw me and ran off. They did come back a bit later, this time with shirts covering their faces (which looked really stupid) but after a bit they left.
We did call the cops while it was happening, but they never did show up. If they ever do show up again, I’ll have my camera handy and snap a few pictures, the neighborhood has a Facebook group, so maybe someone on there knows one of them and can Id them or something.
Anyway, this incident kinda made me think of a few things. Mainly about how different the housing is in the Philippines and in the States. If you go to a decent neighborhood in the Philippines, you’ll see big walls and gates with houses inside of them. It’s like each house has it’s own compound. meanwhile, here in the States, the front of the houses is completely open, some might have a picket fence, but overall there’s nothing to block off the front. The sides do have gates, but they’re mostly made of wood and aren’t locked. It’s really interesting to me how each country has a different take on houses. The way the States does things look better because there’s no different style or color gates, or bland concrete walls, is more friendly because you can get to know your neighbors and what-not and is easier for access, not needing to get out of your vehicle to open gates or something like that. meanwhile, I think the Philippines has safer houses because of the massive gate (most of which have shards of broken glass or barbed wire on top), gives more privacy since you have a massive wall blocking off what you’re doing. The houses in the Philippines usually also have metal bars along the window sills making it nearly impossible to get through them.
I’ve always noticed this difference, but never really thought about it until now. I’m really used to how the Philippines does it, and even now, think it’s weird not to have a massive wall and gate surrounding your house.
