It seems like all of us have certain foods that we like from back home, and a lot of times those exact foods are not available in the Philippines! Often times, though, a substitute food can be found to satisfy your craving. I am lucky, because Feyma is a real expert in finding such foods that satisfy that desire I have for something from back in the States. At other times, though, the food that we want so bad really is available in the Philippines, we just don’t realize that it is available.
When you are in a country that speaks a different language, it is highly possible, in fact it is probable that the item you are looking for has a different name than what you are used to!
A while back, I was talking with John, a friend on Facebook. He told me that he sure missed catfish. I told him that I lived for about 10 years in Louisiana, and catfish is a big staple in the diet down there. In fact, catfish is widely eaten all through the South. I really got to where I enjoyed catfish a lot. But, I still enjoy catfish here in the Philippines! I eat it here often.
John was quite surprised when I told him that you can get catfish right here in Davao (John also lives in Davao), and in fact, pretty much anywhere there is a supermarket in the Philippines. John was eager to find out how to do that, and what to look for. I told him, and he is now enjoying his long lost catfish!

Bob;
Hmmm Catfish… The filet had been available here in Olongapo for over 15 years ago, and the Royal Market used to sell Catfish live from the tank, not the prettiest fish in the river. I was reading that in the US Catfish is the number one selling fish in the markets. LA Alabama and Mississippi all have huge fish farms for Catfish. Hmmm Fried Catfish….
MindanaoBob
So true, Paul. I used to live in Louisiana, and Catfish is HUGE down there! Not the size of the fish… the popularity! ha ha..
Like you, we have the fillets available here and have for many years! Live fish can also be bought along the roadside as well.

Hey Bob good subject,
I’ve never developed a taste for fried catfish, but many years ago I thought I would try baking it. I can’t really remember what I did to that poor fish but it was terrible. Needless to say I never tried it again. But while visiting the Philippines one evening going back to the barangay from Baguio my Bayaw asked me if I like catfish. When I saw the big smiles on everyone’s faces I realized that I had to lie and say yes so they wouldn’t be disappointed. After stopping at a roadside stand to buy BBQ catfish and driving for another half an hour with the smell permeating the Fx I was so hungry I had to try it. Now, every visit we have to make at least one trip to the little stand on the road to the catfish farms! I still don’t like it fried but that BBQ catfish is fantastic!

MindanaoBob
Hi Steve – Now, finding somebody who learned to like Catfish here in the Philippines is unexpected! Great story! Thanks for sharing!
papaduck
Bob,
Nothing like catfish, hush puppies and cole slaw.
MindanaoBob
You sure are right on that, papaduck! I know you lived in Florida prior to coming here, but am not sure if you grew up in the south. The way you said about catfish, though… you sound like a good ole southern boy! 😉
Peter Danos
That would feed the WHOLE barangay!
Jay
Hi Bob,
I always enjoy listening to your podcasts! You do a very through job of answering the questions. I had not heard of the Basa fish. I will look for it on my next visit. Thanks for the great information!
MindanaoBob
Thanks for your kind feedback, Jay! I’m glad you are enjoying the podcast!
It should not be a problem to find the Basa fish, it is literally in just about every single grocery story you might check!
Michael
Hello Bob, mind if I ask where you lived in Louisiana?
MindanaoBob
Hi Michael – We are talking 30 to 40 years ago, but at that time I lived in the Bogalusa, Louisiana area.
