A few days ago while eating our lunch Chris was just bragging to me about this guy that he saw the night before on our local TV here. He said that he saw this guy painting out of a sand. Chris was just so amazed of how this Joseph guy paint while the music was playing.
When it comes to music Chris really is into it. Then my nieces and nephew Glenda, Bebe and Deo chimed in on how amazing the guy was. So I got curious and asked them what is these guy doing?
They told me that this Joseph Erwin Valerio, nickname: “Joseph the Artist”. He was the Ultimate winner of the show here in the Philippines called Talentadong Pinoy (Pinoy got talent). He got started in painting out from the sand after their house was flooded and left with too much sand.
If you guys remembered the big flooding in Manila from the typhoon Ondoy in September 2009, Joseph was thinking of making something out of a sand. He then thought of painting out from it since he is into art. His intention of joining the contest was at least to get the consolation price so that they can buy food. He got lucky. He was competing for 8 weeks and every time the people vote for him and the judges, everybody was in awe of his talent.
After Chris and everybody in the house talked about him I then searched him and watched him on YouTube and saw for myself. I’m really impressed. He just started painting the sand since 2009. How much more if he had the means to study and learn more before when he was younger. I got more curious and saw some other people that painted in the sand. One of them that caught my eye was the winner in Ukraine for the Ukraine got talent. She’s also a sand artist and I’m pretty sure she had the training for a long time. She’s so good, when she’s painting I felt she’s like playing piano the way she moved her body. While watching her, I was thinking what would Joseph the Artist be if he started at the young age and had the money and had training more with the sand painting? I mean he is good now but he would be even better if he had experience for a long time.
I guess he really wants to study fine arts, but his family just doesn’t have any money. His dad was a carpenter. He told Joseph since they could not afford a 4 year college if Joseph will just study vocational course a 2 year program. He finished up with an electrical course. Well, one of the prizes he won from the Philippines Got Talent was a 4 year course scholarship at one of the schools in Manila. I forgot the name of the school that sponsors the program.
He can already pursue his dream of studying fine arts there if he wants to. The school also said if he doesn’t want to continue his studies he can give the scholarship to others that he would want to give it to. It could even his kid, I think. He also won a car and a P1 Million cash prize. He is also representing the Philippines in a contest in Hollywood. I hope he will be the winner there too. If you guys see him there on TV in the States, please vote for him.
He just can’t believe it that he won the ultimate prize and a trip to Hollywood, California. He has been to some other local TV shows here after his winning. One of the shows he was a guest was the “Willing Willie” show, its like a variety show and they give out money and some other stuff. The host of that show came from a poor background. He was just so impressed with the talent of Joseph. Willie gave him money and a few watches for Joseph and his kids and wife. I would not be surprised if Joseph will have a product endorsement soon.
He has been limping when he is walking, a lot of his neighbors teased him about that. He had polio before. But that sickness did not push him away from a big dream. Now those people that laughed at him will be looking high at him. I hope that Joseph’s story will inspire a lot of the teenagers and some dreamers, that no matter what, if you want something and work hard for it you will achieve it.
Way to go Joseph the Artist. Hope you will win in Hollywood.

Hi Feyma;
I didn’t see Joseph until he was on Willing Willy, and was fascinated by his talent, it was unique and original. I couldn’t stop watching. He will do well in this life, as I feel others will be affected by his skill as I was. Bravo, to Joseph The Artist!

@Paul—I’m not sure about it being unique and original. These types of arts came out at least four years ago. Same theme, create something out sand with a background music.
Though this is the first one I’ve seen who is done by a Filipino. The only unique part I saw was there’s actually somebody dancing!
Talented indeed, I agree. It’s always fascinating watching something like this. There’s one video from youtube that I saw years ago, that the artist would change the creating based on the previous creation in a flash! As in, the development of the creation and was quick that people were just in awe, with the speed and quality of the creation. Just like in this video where a woman in blue I think dropped her jaw in awe of his talent.

JC;
It was just my point of reference, as I’ve not left the Philippines within the last ten years, so I’ll rephrase it to read; “For me”, it was unique and original.

Congratulations to Joseph and his family. He received a 4 year scholarship, a new car and money to help support his family and top it off a trip to Hollywood. His family should be very proud of him. Good article and Good luck to Joseph in Hollywood.
Feyma
Hi Papa Duck – Oh I’m pretty sure his family were so proud of him. He deserved to get what he got on the show. Watch out pretty soon he will be a product endorser here. His gonna have billboards all over the Philippines then. Good for him it that happens.
Hope he will do good in Hollywood too.
Take care!
Feyma
Hi Paul – I didn’t even saw the Talentadong show and the Willing Willy. We hardly watched local shows, oh except ANC. But I watched some of it on You Tube. Thank God for internet. Joseph really is a talented guy. All the best for him.

Hi Feyma,
I have not seen Joseph but I have seen the Russian woman do some very dramatic World War 2 sand paintings. Incredible talent. I’ll have to check Youtube for Joseph’s work. I think Willie R. is very funny and love to watch his shows when I’m over there. He’s gotten a bad rap over the last couple of years that I’m not sure he deserves. Thanks for posting this.

Same as Feyma. I don’t usually watch local television programs and only saw his performances on youtube and I am really,. I mean Totally Amazed! His ideas and his works are just like playing a normal sand but sends a deeper meaning.
