While on a jeepney ride from our place to the downtown area, I overheard another passenger’s conversation with an older lady and a not so young lady sitting next to each other.. It intrigued me big time. The traffic did not bother me, that’s the good thing. Lol. Thank God.
The conversation goes: Older lady talking: Her son got and accident and badly injured his head. They were staying in a hospital here in Davao City at Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC or formerly called DMC) for 2 months and it should cost them like over 300K. It’s a government hospital. The older lady said with the help of the social services and PCSO and local government here and the local government in the place where she’s from when they got out of the hospital they paid only 1K. All of the medicine for her son was paid by her local government and some donations from others. She’s not from Davao City area. The mom just said that they come to the hospital every month for check up. The medicine were already taking care of by donations and some from their local government. She said she doesn’t mind waiting at the hospital for hours or almost a day. She’s just thankful that the government helped them out. She said even if they wait a few days, it’s okay for her. She adds they got everything almost free anyway.
The other younger lady chimed in about her neighbor. The kid of her neighbor got ill. The parents of that kid brought the kid to the hospital SPMC hospital. The kid needs surgery and other sickness comes up. He comes to the hospital for therapy, eye care and other medical needs. I guess they also are happy to wait in line for hours because the kid got free medical care.
While listening to those ladies, I was thinking of my nephew when he was hospitalized in that hospital a few years ago. I posted an article here a few years back. My nephew got burned on his feet, the heel of his 2 feet were burned, he lost almost all his toes. He stayed in that hospital for a little over a month. The school that my nephew got injured paid some of the cost and others from charities. My brother was really happy that the school worked out everything with the social services and charities. I think my nephew was given some free medicines from the pharmacy too. I’m not sure on that though. It was really a scary time for my brother seeing his son suffered. I saw my nephew last month, I’m happy to say here that his feet healed pretty good.
The older lady said the only thing if you want to be treated on that hospital, you have to have patience. Just don’t get mad if you went there early in the morning and it’s not uncommon that you will be seeing the doctor in the early afternoon or late afternoon. That hospital really catered for the poor people. Those ladies said they go there every time they have medical problems even if they wait long hours.

Sometimes many of us are not very patient at all. Your story shows how patience has its reward. Maybe all of us should work on that part of our lives.
