Well since you guys are talking about fruits. Yesterday Bob, Mom, Chris and Me went for a ride around Davao. On our way we decided to get lots of fruits. One of the fruit that we got was durian. We want mom to try it. This is her first time to try durian. She likes it too. I first tried durian when I was a kid. When my brother used to study here in Davao during the 70’s when ever he goes home during the weekend he will bring home with him durian because my parents like it. When I tried durian at that time I didn’t like the taste and the smell. Since living here in Davao I tried it once and I kind of like it but I don’t like the texture. The smell don’t bother me anymore. By the way I like the durian cake and candy, but I don’t like the durian ice cream and durian coffee its way too strong for me.
Well, yesterday I tried durian again. You know what I like it, but only the 101 variety. I like the texture. It’s not mushy unlike the one I tasted before. I guess I will just have to keep on trying the other kinds of durian maybe later I will like it. Theirs lot of different kinds of durian. My nieces and nephew they like to eat any kind of durian. It doesn’t matter to them as long as its durian they will eat it. ๐ย One of our people here in the house like it now too. She’s like me she likes the texture of the 101. Now I’m trying convincing our four kids to try to eat durian, but they just said to me thank you very much, not trying it. Our youngest son was complaining this morning. He said that were trying to kill him with the smell of the durian. We had some left over and we put it inside the fridge and when he opened the fridge the smell was strong. He just hated it.
Anyway, I’m happy that I gave it a try again. Even though durian is not my favorite fruit at least I can sit down with Bob and my family sometime just eating durian. I might eat more than them. ๐
Hey you guys that love to eat durian don’t get jealous. Next time I will eat durian first bite is for you. ๐ Cheers!
Cheryll Ann
It’s rare to find bread fruit these days, I first tried it a few years ago – fried- blech blech, hehehhee!
Latik is good, LOL LOL!
If anyone went to the back of SM during kadayawan they were selling this Miracle Fruit Tree, lol lol! The fruit looked like a watermelon only lighter green, it’s supposedly sweet when cooked. They were selling both fruit and the tree.
Anyone ever tried it?
Teng
Hi Feyma,
I eat Durian but I don't really miss it so much. I miss eating mango espeially the variety called 'Mangga Doldol'. Mangga Doldol tastes like Indian Mango but 'Mangga Doldol' is double in size. I love it when it is just getting yellowish inside and eating it with salt. Of course, Mangga Cebu is the best when it's not "Ahat ang Pagkahinog"(especially when they put 'Kalburo'). I've never seen 'Kalubi' anymore because some of our forests were gone. I think most of you don't know what 'Kalubi' is. Kalubi is a wild fruit and it can only be found in the forest. It is the hardest fruit to pick because its trunk is full of thorns while the fruits are located at the bottom of the trunk. Marang and Lansones are also my favorites.I guess it's Lansones season when I go home by November. Really looking forward to that..
John Grant
I went o a restuarnt for dinner with friends last week, bt the smell of Durian meant I could not stay I had to leave!!! I really hate the tatse and when opened it looks like something from the film ALIEN!!!!!
macky
yeah, but that alien tastes goooood.
angie
Probably it was destined that I not meet an *alien* yet. I spent Saturday looking for durian in the closest Asian food store I could find and I did not find any.
I was looking for it in the frozen section as I had been advised that I better try durian ice cream first; then if I can handle that, try the frozen durian; and if I can handle that, then I can move on to the fruit itself. Well, I did not find the ice cream nor the frozen fruit.
I was willing to settle for a frozen alien and I was not even granted my wish ๐
Probably I need to go further and try Macky's suggestion and head on to Pacific Supermarket.
Bob
Hi John – I really love the fragrance of Durian! This time of year is great when you can drive around town and smell the durian in the air! Honestly, I really love it!
brian
Smells like hell taste like heaven….THEY LIED !
Louis
My first experience with seeing an smelling Durian was at Seoul Plaza asian market in Catonsville, Md. Those durian they had there were small compared to what you can find here and I laughed thinking it looked medieval. Over the weekend my wife and I went to Pearl Farm resort and on the dessert bar they had "Durian Float". Now I've had Mango Float before, but this was different, 2 layers of cream filled with fresh Durian in the center. Yes I tried it, I found that although I liked it, I can't say it was my favourite thing in the world. Maybe I just have to try different varieties, and yes I will definately try it again.
Tina
Hello All,
I can have durian for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in between. Need I say more? ๐
Cheryll Ann
YUMMY YUMMY! I don't like the new fangled varieties, I prefer native Durian, it has less flesh and has a bigger seed. It's REALLY good.
I won't eat certain varieties like Chani (not sure how it's spelled) tastes like camote, la dee da…
Durian Jam on bread is pretty good.
Do youguys know you can boil durian seeds and eat them?
Feyma
Hi Teng – Really on mango I almost like all of them except the wani. If you heard of that kind. I've never heard of Kalubi. I will try to ask with my family about that fruit. Yeah lanzones would still be plenty when you come here in November. Hmm you must be dreaming now of the fruits here? ๐
Tina
Hi Cheryll Ann,
The native durian you're talking about, is that the Arancillo? Arancillo is my favorite. I would eat Chani if there was nothing else available.
Hmmm, boiled durian seeds? Never had them. I guess I should hang out with you more as I learn more about food and I KNOW we both love to eat! ๐
Cheryll Ann
Hi Tina,
I have no idea I just tell the driver or the mall managerto go and buy some native Durian, LOL LOL! I never go to the stalls myself and buy the durian, I am lazy.
I just like to eat and sleep.
I like Marang even more than Durian. I am such a PIG!
Tina
Hi Feyma,
How could you not like "wani"? That's another favorite of mine! I learned to eat it in Zamboanga where it's more abundant. It's rare in Davao but I look for it whenever I'm there. It's delicious!!! I think it's the texture that bothers you, and the strong flavor. It' similar to durian in this respect. Okay, gotta go, cannot keep thinking about food without getting hungry. ๐
macky
in my case. i love all types of durian. the only reason why i know that the smell is considered bad is from what
other people say. to me, i've always like the fragrance. makes me true a dabawenyo, i guess.
you too, Bob. you seemed to have passed the durian test with flying colors. ๐
tina, i'm with you. breakfast, lunch, merienda, dinner, midnight meal …..
Feyma
Hi john – You will get used to the smell later. Wow, it would be hard for you during durian time here in Davao then? Like now. When were driving yesterday it seems that in every corner of Davao their would be durian stand.
Do you like other fruits here?
Tina
Hi Cheryll Ann,
Unfortunately, I can't eat marang and nangka (jackfruit) anymore. For some reason, I developed an allergy to them. I was vacationing one time with my husband and a friend served us nangka for dessert. I ate some and my throat got so itchy, I thought I needed to go to the hospital! Same thing with my husband. Our poor hostess had someone run to the drugstore to get Benadryl. The same thing happens with marang.
Maybe next time I eat them, I should have Benadryl ready – just in case… ๐
Feyma
Hi Macky – You are right now the alien taste good.
Hi Angie – I'm so sorry you had a hard time finding the alien.
Hi Brian – That's what I've heard.
Hi Louis – Have fun trying then.
Cheryll Ann
Oh Tina, that sucks. I am just glad you are ok and nothing bad happened to you when you had that allergy…
Feyma
Hi Tina- Hey from now on I'm gonna call you the durian lady. ๐ Just kidding.
Now I definitely know you really, really love durian. Good for you.
Hi Cheryll Ann – I saw that chane variety yesterday. I'm glad I didn't buy that kind. I think for now I better stick to 101.
Feyma
Hi Tina – I'm sorry to hear with your allergy. That's too bad.
jul
hi All:
Here YOU go again, making me envious of the fruits you're eating there !
Feyma: I also don't care about the variety of durian, as long as it's durian. Haven't tasted durian flavored icecream Hmmm, durian cake, too! A friend boasted of his wife's durian pie. I haven't tried it pa.
Cheryll Ann: Durian seeds look like jackfruit (nangka) seeds. I love boiled jackfruit seeds. Have you tried the antipolo tree seeds (boiled) ? Lami pud but antipolo trees are rare now adays because they're popular for lumber and furniture, second to narra, perhaps.
John Grant: Haha your imagination is pretty wild. Macky is right, the Alien is lami kaayo…
Cheryll Ann
Feyma – you might like the Chani – many like it. Personal preference – I don't like it, hehehe. Coz I grew up eating native variety.
Hi jul – OMG now I must try that, LOLLOL! Never had it before. Hav eyou had bread fruit? EWWW no good, lol lol!
jul
Hi Cheryll Ann;
Gosh, my memories of breadfruit (kulo) were so many! We had an immediate neighbor who sold breadfruit with latik. Father usually brought basketfull (very heavy) from his cousin's farm. The boiling part was too long, as if the entire firewood saved for rainy days had to be used + the ritual of making latik (coconut milk syrup) seemed an eternity before you can actually eat the combo.
Teng
Hi Feyma,
I also don't like the flavor of "Mangga Wani' especially when it is ripe. I can handle it when it's still green.
Yep, Kalubi is not really a known fruit I'm afraid. Probably I'm the only one in this forum who knew about it. It could be also a 'manobo' word because the monobos in our Barrio are the experts of harvesting this fruit.
Feyma
Hi Jul & Cheryll Ann – Now were talking alien. ๐ You know lots of stuff that I don't have a clue. I've never heard of breadfruit until just now with the 2 of you. Hey but I know latik and I like that a lot. I've tried boiled jackfruit seeds and I like it.
Cheryll Ann
Oh anyone had MABOLO fruit? YUM YUM!
angie
Cheryll Ann.
Post #26. Miracle Fruit Tree??? Oh wow, we need a televangelist to peddle this. What time will the infomercial be showing?? ๐ This will be a good money-maker.
angie
Speaking of fruits, is mangosteen also native to that area around Davao, etc? Or am I mistaken? Mangosteen juice is heavily promoted in the US thru network marketing. Expensive, too… 1 25-oz bottle is about $40.00.
Supposedly it's a breakthrough discovery as a potent source of antioxidants (from xanthones).
I don't know if this is just a fad. I remember a few years back, the highly acclaimed miracle cure was the Noni juice. Remember that? So what's next? I even got caught up in the hype and had noni juice ordered from the Philippines. I did not like the taste, that's for sure. And it was expensive…
Is durian a juicy fruit? Is there a durian juice?
Cheryll Ann
Angie, LOL LOL! ๐ hehehe about the miracle fruit. Don't know what was so miraculous about it, hahahaha.
Anyway there is no durian juice and it's not spicy, it's sweet and bitter at the same time – I don't like the very sweet kind.
Xango – that's what you are talking about right?
My friend who had breast cancer ate a lot of mangosteen when she was having Chemo, she siad it helped.
Right now I am taking MX3 – it's mangosteen capsules, it supposed to help my diabetes, hope it's not all hype.
I once took ampalaya capsules, did not help at all, LOL LOL!
angie
Yes, Cheryll, I'm talking about Xango. My friend from L.A. is raving about it and she wants me to try it. Is Xango available in the Philippines? Have never heard of ampalaya capsules. Didn't even know that it is available in capsules now. Probably that goes well with rice? ๐
On a more serious note, they did a study on longevity and as I remember the people from Okinawa have been beating the biological clock and many live past their 90's and 100's. It is said that their diet is high on bittermelon and turmeric tea. Bittermelon is ampalaya, right?
Cheryll Ann
Yes, I have seen Xango here, looks dusgusting as the liquid is dark, I don't wanna drink it, lol lol. That's why I bought MX3 I figured it's the same only 1 is liquid 1 is in capsule form
Yes Ampalaya is bittermelon – let me eat more of that if it extends longevity, hehehe ๐
Have you heard of SKII? It's a skin product based on ingredients of Sake or something to that effect. becaus eit seems the hands of the Sake factory workers were ageless, and had no age spots, etc so they made this SKII product for the face – quite pricey, and BOY it DOES NOT work and made me break out. LOL LOL LOL!
angie
Cheryll Ann,
There's a book on Amazon related to that Okinawa study. It's called "The Okinawa Way." It's been endorsed by some people in the medical field (those who are into homeopathy and naturopathy, like Dr. Andrew Weill, Dr. Deepak Chopra and others).
I first became aware of that study thru a PBS program hosted by Dr. Weill. I think Time & Newsweek also featured articles about that.
BTW, on Saturday, I spent the afternoon with a friend who taught me how to make a really good organic drink which she says, busy (ie, lazy folks like me, LoL) can consider a liquefied meal.
But I got to gather my ingredients together. First I got to order the protein powder which is the base of the drink, available from the internet, mail-order only. It's called "Garden of Life." What an appealing name!!
Then I have to go to Whole Earth Foods and Trader Joes for organic fruits, flaxseed, hemp nuts, rice milk, etc.
Who say's it's a lazy woman's food? Just gathering the ingredients is already a lot of time. But it was so good as she demo'ed it to me and let me have 2 glassfuls of it. Better than jamba juice, she said.
And oh yes, she also puts turmeric. She said turmeric is a must.
marygrace
Hello Feyma – it doesnt matter if what variety – as long as its Durian – yum yum yum… i want to try the Durian coffee – where is that place in Davao that serves D-coffee?
Cheryll Ann
Angie – I think I will just have Jamba Juice, hehehe. I had it at valley Fair mall I think…. I did not ask for a BOOST hehehe. I just prefer plain fruit shakes.
Your shake sounds like a wot of work, hehehee GOOD LUCK! Does it taste good?
Mary grace – it's called Blu Gre
jul
Hi Feyma: Breadfruit or kulo (no glottal ending, Like grandpa=Lolo) is a huge tree with huge leaves. Are you familiar with antipolo tree ? The leaves of kulo resemble that of antipolo.
Hi Angie: Mangosteen is also used as herbal remedy for stomach-ache. The tough skin of ripe mangosteen is dried and stored. When tummy is aching, boil one or two of the dried skin and drink it like a tea. Mangosteen is hard to grow and it takes at least 15 years to bear fruit, like, lanzones, unless it's grafted.
Hi Cheryll Ann: The husband of my former boss who's diabetic was eating balimbing ("star fruit") regularly. I heard it from several friends who have diabetic relatives. Try it. Ampalaya is good too but not certain about it as remedy for diabetes. NONI juice is shockingly expensive in the Asian store here–the owner has been suffering with diabetes. He claims that NONI is a miracle juice for him. My mother had those little bushes she claimed as NONI. I saw the fruits of this wild variety of NONI and they looked like having eyes and horns. Weird looking.
And speaking of mabolo, I haven't seen it since my college days. The University where I attended had rows of those trees along one of the buildings and it destructed students a lot when the fruits were ripe seen from across the classrooms' windows! Pretty color but hairy!
Now, Xango & SKII—these are aliens to me!
Cheryll Ann
Jul – they say that balimbing, Guava, and Iba, is also good for diabetics.
Noni jiuce was a fad here ages ago, I don't see it anymore, I wa stold it would help my "keratosis pilaris" if I rubbed it on my arms and legs – NO WAY!
mabolo is pretty good, LOL! Not a big fave but it's good.
My most fave fruit is mangosteen BUT I an craving pomegranates. POmegranate juice is no good at groceries, yuck (none here in PH though) Pomegranate martini on the other hand OMG OMG! SOOO Good!
jul
Hi Cheryll Ann: Are you not in bed yet ? hehehe…
To me, you are a food and fruit guru! And maybe wine, too! ๐
Cheryll Ann
Jul – I am an insomniac and I don't work as an employee, LOL! So I keep my own time. I don't drink wine, I cook with it, hehhe. Just made beef stew with red wine earlier…YUM YUM! (ever seen people with stained red teeth after drinking red wine? ewwww)
Cheryll Ann
Speaking of food have you been to the food area of Harrod's? OMG OMG OMG! I must have been the only person who was only interested in that area of Harrod's hehehe. Ok I am sooo hungry now….
Bob
Hi marygrace – the best Durian Coffee is at Blugre Cafe. They have locations at Lanco Building in Bajada and also at Matina Town Square.
Louis
First Blugre coffee I ever went to was in SM and I loved it. Even bought a mug lol.
Bob
That's right, Louis. I had forgotten that Blugre recently re-opened in SM City Davao. They had a shop there several years ago and closed it down, but opened a new one there a few months ago. Thanks for the reminder.
Jio
Hi Feyma,
I also do like durian (taste superb, smell uh… no). Yeah, forget the smell and just dig into the luscious flesh of durian. Though I know Midnanao sells a lot of durians there but not much in Luzon area where I lived.
I wonder whether they sell prepacked durians (peeled bits and seeled fresh in styrofoam containers) just like here in SG. I know the people here always boast of having this alien fruit unique to them (and like to shock tourists) but they haven't seen the mighty durian varieties that Philippines has to offer.
Er, what is 101 variety?
marygrace
Hello Bob – Hello Cheryll Ann – thanks for that info (BluGre)
Can we meet for D-Coffee then? ๐
marygrace
Ops forgot –> on my next vacation — after 15months — ugh!
Bob
Hi marygrace – Absolutely! I'd enjoy getting together with you for Durian Coffee at Blugre!
Lea
I tried durian, and never liked it, esp. the smell. I tried several times before. I prefer the other one, I forgot the name, looks like durian also.
Feyma's post encouraged me to give it another chance, last chance. ๐ But I guess, it has to wait 'til next visit.
feyma
Hi Lea – I think your talking about marang. I like marang a lot especailly chill a little bit. Hmmm good.
Ha ha ha. When do you think is your next visit? I want to see it when you try durian. ๐
Lea
Yes, Feyma, that's what I'm talking about, the marang! Thank you.
We're planning to visit Gensan next year, most likely after June, since we're hosting an exchange student right now for the school year. If left to me, I want to leave right after my tax season next year – April or May, before school starts int he Phils. too. We'll see…
feyma
Hi Lea – Let me know then when you get to GenSan. Hope we could meet up and have coffee. Maybe we could have marang and durian too. ๐
Oh what country is your exchange student from?
Lea
Feyma, I will surely tell you.
Our exchange student is a girl from India.
