A few days ago, Mexico was hit by a strong earthquake, I think it was an 8.3. The earthquake caused a tsunami that could hit the Philippines. There were a couple things that kinda shocked me when it happened.
To be honest, I didn’t expect anything to happen. This has happened before, back when the earthquake that hit Japan happened, we were supposed to be hit by a tsunami, but it never came. Davao is also kind of surrounded by mountains, which protects us from typhoons and should protect us from tsunamis. I’ve always been glad to live in Davao because of this. Whenever a typhoon is coming, we’ve never really had to worry, except maybe once, but even that wasn’t a big deal in the end.
What kinda surprised me was, shortly after finding out about the tsunami, I received a text message about it. The text message was sent out by the national government. The text basically just said that a tsunami might be coming and to be careful in Filipino. While I do think there could be some improvements to this system, I’m glad there is something like it. A couple improvements I can think of right off the bat would be to have an English version right underneath the Filipino one and maybe give a bit more in terms of detail, but they probably didn’t have much to go on anyway which is why they didn’t add too much. Now I’m curious what else they use this for, like in the States they have Amber alerts for when someone (mostly kids) have been taken, they’d send a message to everyone in the area with details on the vehicle they are looking for. I’m not really sure if the system in the Philippines is new or not, but with so many people here with cell phones (pretty much everyone), it’s not a surprise that they have something like this. This is the first time I’ve ever gotten a message like that, so I assume it’s fairly new.
The tsunami didn’t come, thankfully, but it is kind of a weird time having all these natural disasters. A bunch of hurricanes around North America, fires in the western US, an earthquake in Mexico and a tsunami warning here in the Philippines. I know that we’re in the middle of hurricane season so the hurricanes are easily explained, but having at least 3 at once is kinda scary. The fires I know were caused by stupid people and it just spiraled out of control and basically engulfed a lot of land in the west. I’ll repeat this just because, I really am glad that we live in Davao, where natural disasters aren’t common.
So that’s been a bit of excitement in my week. The possibility of a tsunami hitting us, learning of an alert system here via text, kinda worried for some of my friends who live in Georgia and Louisiana because of the hurricanes… It looks like they’re gonna be alright and I know we’re fine cause the tsunami didn’t hit, so that’s good.
