We have all heard the moniker “Ugly American,” it is used to describe Americans who go overseas and act in a poor manner. When Americans are like this, it really gives a bad name to all Americans who live or travel in other countries. I just saw this story on the Internet, and found it typical of the “Ugly American:”
An American national was arrested before dawn Saturday for refusing to pay the bills for the drinks he consumed at an establishment in Manila’s Baywalk area.
Radio dzRH reported that the American refused to give his name even when he was brought to the Ospital ng Maynila (OSMA) for a medical examination.
“You talk to my lawyer,” SPO4 Roberto Diestro of the Manila Police District Station 5 recalled the American repeatedly telling them, when they asked his name.
Diestro said the incident took place at about 3 a.m., when the American national refused to pay an P860 bill handed over by the waiter.
The waiter called police, who arrested the American and brought him to OSMA for a medical examination. It was not immediately clear if the American resisted arrest. – GMANews.TV
My goodness, the guy owed P860 for drinks and basically refused to pay? That’s less than $20, and over that small amount he created a scene. Of course, we don’t know his side of the story. Maybe he thought that he was being overcharged. Still, even if I was being overcharged, I would not create a scene and end up in jail for it! I’d just pay it and not return to the establishment!

Bob, he must be too drunk to process everything. Surely, if he sees how a jail in the PI looks like, he's willing to pay more than P860 just to stay away from it.

Hi Bobby – I bet that now that he has sobered up he can probably pay the bill, and maybe a little extra to get himself out of hot water. That will probably get him back his freedom. It will probably teach him a lesson in life too. Maybe he'll be a little more humble next time.

There must be something more to this story, for him to refuse to pay P860. Or, he must have been so drunk to think clearly. I just can't imagine someone getting so drunk for less than $20, what a bargain! 😆
Hi Tina – Yeah, I'll be interested to hear more, I just hope it is reported! I have seen foreigners act like this, though, so it doesn't surprise me. Heck, I probably acted like this at times (although not this bad, I hope) in my pre-adjustment days! 🙁
Have had more than my fair share of experiences with "Ugly Americans":sad: One thing they have in common, though: alcohol makes them uglier!:smile:
There is a story in the small town where we used to live about a German (whom they thought was an amrican at first, of course) who was drunk and very disorderly and was taken to the town jail, which was in an upstairs room above the police station. No one could communicate with him, and all he did was yell and threaten. Finally, and he must have been sober by this time, he took off his clothes and began throwing, uh, sewege on the people outside watching the spectecle. Who knows how long ago it happened, but it is still remembered! I'm glad they figured out he wasn't American, at least! I have to say that all foreigners tend to get painted with the brush of a few bad ones. You nice guys have to prove you aren't like the notorious ones.
Hi American – Wow! That must have been some event. I almost said it must have been "something to see" but given the feces being thrown, I'm glad I wasn't around to actually see it! 🙄
