I’m not talking about shoes! Do you know what Adidas are? Any Filipino would know this for sure, but I wonder how many of our foreign readers know what they are? I’ll give you a clue, it’s a type of street food that you can find in the Philippines.
For the first person who can guess what it is, I’ll give you a free subscription to this blog! Ha ha… I know, it’s free anyway, but I’m just kidding with you.
Also, in the comments, what other types of street food can you tell us about that are using funny names?
Raquel
Ohhh… I know what Adidas is! But I guess I should as I'm Filipino. Nope, I don't eat Adidas though. Other Pinoy street food that have funny names (to me at least) are Betamax, Tokneneng, Kwek-Kwek and Helmet! 😀
Love your blog btw. I live abroad now and it's great to look my home country through an expat's eyes. Makes me miss it more!

Adidas are chicken feet. This link is to a page of pictures of food from street vendors in the Philippines: http://my_sarisari_store.typepad.com/my_sarisari_store/street_food/index.html
Kevin
Maybe the two most interesting nicknames for street food are, "Betamax" and "IUD". Most people in the states won't remember that Sony Betamax Tapes were the original VCR tapes. The streetfood by that name is roasted chicken blood. The rectangles they are cut from resemble a Betamax.
IUD is a snack of a little jumble of chicken intestines. The coil of intestines resembles the birth control device called IUD.

Bob,
I was talking to Elena while we read your blog, so I am kind of cheating. The answer is Chicken feet.
I do not know anout eating Adidas, but one thing I do not think I will try is Balut.
Pete
Yes Bob, It is chicken feet because I asked….you know who !!
Laurence
Bob,
When I was visiting my wife's village I was given "number one soup". I had no idea what was in it, but judging by the grins on my companions faces it was something different. I asked my wife and she replied "you don't wanna know". I still don't know what was in it.
Tina
Hi Bob,
Chicken feet (no, I don't eat it). I think we have that here too, in Chinatown, I see that being served when we go for dimsum. I'm not sure if they also serve duck feet, I think they do. We have a standing joke that all the chicken in Chinatown are on crutches because of this dish. 🙂 Have they tried this on "Fear Factor" yet? I think they should, including the rest of the stuff! Ha-ha-ha!
Bob
Ok, OK, gang… I'm in a very generous mood today! I'm going to give all of you free subscriptions to this blog, and any of my other blogs too! Feel free to visit anytime, and you can even subscribe through the RSS, if you wish! Ha ha… don't get too excited, it's always been free anyway!
Hi Raquel – Thanks for visiting! I appreciate your comment about enjoying the blog and seeing your country through an expat's eyes. That's part of what this blog is all about! I'm glad you enjoy it, and I hope you have a great life in your new home country!
Hi Rick – As many others have said, Adidas are Chicken feet! I have eaten them before, but not here, I had them back in the States once. They were OK, but I don't crave for them! 😉
Hi Kevin – Thanks for sharing the link! Nice Photoblog you have there.
Hi Kevin (2) – Ha ha… Betamax and IUD. Filipinos will never fail to come up with humorous names for their foods and other inventions! I love the sense of humor here!
Hi Bruce – I've tried Adidas, in my opinion you aren't missing that much. Balut – I'm staying away from it too!
Hi Pete – I have worn Adidas many times! I'll leave the Adidas food for Gina, though! Tell her to come down to Davao and I'll take her out for a feast!
Hi Laurence – Honestly, I have no idea what "number one soup" is. The first thing that came to my mind was urine. You know how you tell kids about going "number 1 or number 2"? I can only hope that it's not that kind of "number 1". Well, at least it wasn't "number 2 soup." 🙂
Hi Tina – I once saw an episode of Fear Factor (I hardly ever watch that) where they ate Balut! That was interesting!
Tina
Hi Bob,
Ken's famous line is "I've eaten balut… with the lights on!" He just enjoys watching people's reactions. 🙂
Bob
Hi Tina – Wow! Congratulations to Ken! He even has Feyma beat. She has only tried Balut once that I know of, and she was in a dark closet to do so! 🙂

Since we're into funny names of Fil dishes, is there anyone here who has tried eating "Remember Me " or at least know what it is ? I don't know what #1 Soup is either, Bob. Hmmm, quiet a mystery. Have you tried Dinuguan, Bob ?
Bob
Hi Jul – I am not familiar with "remember me," what is it? I am still hoping to find out what the "number one soup" is too!
Yes, I did try Dinuguan once. It is not on my "favorites" list, though!
Louis
I haven't heard of soup no1 but I had soup no5 and that's braised umm beef dork if you know what I mean. I've had balut on a number of occasions and I like it. I can get entertaining when I have had some red horse with my impersonations of the street vendor calls.
Bob
Hi Louis – I have been told that No. 1 soup is made with bovine testicles. Those are widely eaten in the Western USA. We call them "Rocky Mountain Oysters."
Sidney
Hi Bob,
Don't know if you still remember me. We met online in a previous life… I think it was in a forum about the Philippines (Living in the Philippines or was it your own forum?). There were often some heated discussion in those forums. Anyway I made it to the Philippines in 2002 and I am now living in the Philippines.
Glad to see you are doing well!
Best regards,
Sidney (from Belgium)
I will link to my photo blog about the Philippines.

Bob
Hi Sidney – I do remember you, but like you I don't remember just where we met! Thank you for dropping by! Where in the Philippines are you living?
Sidney
Sorry, there was a typo in my comment.
I made it to the Philippines in 2002 and I am now living in Manila. 😉
Wow! You got a lot of blogs.
Bob
Hi Sidney – Yep, I actually have about 150 blogs! But, I have a staff of employees who take care of most of them. On a few of them I write myself, though, like this one! 😆
