Hi Everyone in the States or People that live all over the world that celebrate Thanksgiving. Happy Turkey “GOBBLE” to all. We havw a lot to be thankful for to God. Well in our household we celebrate Thanksgiving on Saturday, since the kids has school on Thursday, the kids usually come home around 4:30 in the afternoon. It’s really late and short time for them to sit down and have dinner with us. We want them to really enjoy the Thanksgiving Day so we made it Saturday since we lived here in the Philippines.
We really prepare the American tradition of Thanksgiving. We will have turkey butterball of course. Bob will help me make the stuffing and gravy. I will prepare mashed potatoes, beans, the yams I will make it with our local sweet potato (Camote), we made that a lot and it turned out good. It is hard to find ready to cook yams in a can here that were imported from the States. So why not make our very own camote here. Also pumpkin pie, the other day I tried to use the local squash to substitute into pumpkin for my pie and it turned out good. Bob and the kids liked it. I think because its almost thanksgiving its hard to find imported pumpkin in a can here. So I decided to make pumpkin pie out from squash and Bob told me that he can’t tell the difference anyway. The thing is its cheaper too.
Our turkey we have arranged for it to be roasted (lechon style) in our local lechon house. It’s really good. Honestly its not even dry inside. I prepare the turkey in the morning of Saturday. I rub with butter and salt and pepper inside out. Then put some lemon grass (Tanglad) inside the turkey while its being roasted. The smell of the tanglad will remain. Gosh, while typing now my mouth is drooling.
I hope each and everyone of you have a good Thanksgiving Day. Travel safe you guys. Happy Eating Time!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY!
Beth
Thanks Feyma! Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
I am thankful to have found this website because it makes me feel a direct (although virtual) connection to my homeland.
Thanks Bob for this online magazine and for sharing it to non-expats (Philippines) like myself, although in the true definition of expat, I am one because I don't live in my country of origin at the moment. ๐
Have a good weekend to you all!!
Beth
Well, it should have been: …"it gives me a direct (although virtual) connection to my homeland." ๐
also "for sharing it "with" non-expats..""" ๐
I'm sure you get it.
BrSpiritus
Got the turkey in the oven now, made pensylvania dutch apple sausage stuffing (if you want the recipe e-mail me), pumpkin pie with scratch pie crust of course (intersting idea with the local squash. I have been curious about that), Apple pie all from scratch and whatever else everyone is bringing. Oh and of course gravy ๐ Happy Thanksgiving

Hi BrSpiritus – I think here we have to make almost everything from scratch. I also made my pie crust from scratch. I made lots of squash for my pie. The left over, we made bread and cookies. It tastes really good.

Good Day!
Although I'm not an American, but I do know Thanksgiving is such a very important and valuable day for all Americans the world over, and of such inspiring origin, too! The word says it all! What started as a humble gathering of Pilgrims and America's first immigrants, as a way of giving thanks to the Lord for their freedom from oppression and tyranny, is now that wonderful occassion to be with family (or friends) wherever they may be in the world! What a truly merry time for celebration!
Here in the Philippines, I think Noche Buena on Christmas Eve is the closest equivalent occassion, giving thanks that Christ was born. I think the only difference in the celebration is the Star of the feast-Turkey for Thanksgiving, and "Hamon" (Ham) for Noche Buena!
I hope everyday would be a "Thanks-Giving" Day! God Bless!
By the way, I love turkey, too!
Neng

Hi JR Tingson – Yeah similar occasions the way we celebrate but just have different meaning. The family and friends being was the nice part of it too. When I had my first Thanksgiving in the States I really like it a lot. Bob's mom and dad prepared a fancy dinner for us and my brother-in-laws family. It was nice and Bob and I tried to carry that tradition for our kids now too.
Anyway, thank you for stopping by. I hope you and your family will have a good Noche Buena soon. Happy Eating. ๐
Feyma
Hi Neng – Thank you so much. Keep busy cooking on that turkey leftover. Soup and sandwich sounds good.

Thank you so much for dropping by!
Feyma

ummmm Love squash pie we have it every year just as good as pumpkin but easer to make ..
Feyma
Hi Phil R. – I am not sure really if its easier to make than pumpkin. I think for me its just the same. We might make it differently though. The hard one to make was the crust. It's time consuming.
Thanks for the comment. Happy Holidays!
