Last week was a search for Bb. Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) here. On this beauty pageant they will get like 3 ladies that will represent the Philippines on all the pageant abroad like Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss World. Its a bit controversial this time.
Here is a look at the eventual contest winner and how she answered the question put to her, see what you think!
Well, during the pageant and it was time for the question and answer portion for the top 10 contestants and one contestant was Janina San Miguel, and asked by this question by the judge: “What role did your family play with you as candidate for Bb. Pilipinas?” Wow, I was shocked that she didn’t really give a good answer. Or was she just too nervous? She said before the question that she didn’t feel any pressure, but when answering the question it shows that she’s really nervous, her answer was just all over the place and it didn’t make any sense. I know it’s hard to be on live TV and millions of people watching, but its really a concern now for her when it is time of the Miss World Pageant and its on live TV all over the world. How can she handle the pressure then? Like what she said she’s 17 years old and its her first time, maybe she’s not yet ready right now. Maybe in a year or 2. It really shocked me that she was chosen to win.
Maybe she still can make it. One of the contestant before that got the first runner up in Miss World ’93 (Miss Ruffa Gutierrez) said that Miss Janina San Miguel still had 7 more months to practice and build confidence. She adds that the pageant is not just for beauty but for brain too. I really hope she will make it.
What do you guys think?
athena
oh my god… that was not even an answer…. ๐ฏ

Hmmm
Im not saying it is fixed, but with a name like San Miguel perhaps she was the predetermined winner ๐ก
Cheryll Ann
HAHAHAHHAHA! ROTFL!!!!!!!!
I think my dogs are smarter than she is, hehehehehehe!
CHAS
Sorry to say this, but she is to young and naive, she has been thrown in a snake pit,it will end in disaster.
Simon
I think it's quite endearing, a situation, where people warm to you.
She's only young & anybody would be nervous in her position.
Everybody was smiling. ๐
AmericanLola
Oh dear… sounds like she memorized the answer to the wrong question. And I have to agree with Cheryll that she doesn't come across as very bright, but then, the English question portion is always tricky when English is your second or third language.
Klaus Doring
Hi Feyma, thanks for this interesting post. Have you read or notice the comments in Philippine media during the last days??? Together with Randy (American Idol) I would comment it like this: "Check it out – check it out man! You are NOT ๐ welcome to Hollywood!!!" – Distressing, ashamed… SORRY!!!
Feyma
Hi Athena – Yeah, thats right she didn't really answer. Thats my fear when she would go then for the competition she can't answer like that and win. Its really shocking how she could win on that kind of answer. ๐
Feyma
Hi Neal in Ri – Ha ha ha… ๐ ๐ I didn't even think of that… ๐
Feyma
Hi Cheryll Ann – ๐ ๐
Feyma
Hi 4 CHAS – Thats the thing she is not ready and now she was put into more pressure by letting her win. Really I hope she can pull herself together for the miss world.
Feyma
Hi Simon – I think theirs more deserving contestant than her. It just show she's not ready…
Feyma
Hi Klaus Doring – Yeah, "Distressing, ashamed" are the common phrase I heard from people when they talked about it. A lot of them are shocked that she made it through. ๐
Feyma
Hi AmericanLola – Its really a shock. If you asked people on the street, they too are wondering how on earth she won with that answer?..
Dr. Sponk Long
3/4 on the tape I think it's the emcee who said in the background "puede Tagalog". She should have followed the advice.
Also, I don't think she understood the question. It should have been translated to Tagalog or Bisaya or what ever her spoken dialect is.
Flipinos pride themselves to speak good English. This used to be correct but no longer.
There are always translators at those International Pageants. Non-English speaking contestants often win. Hopefully this young lady will avail of one (translator).
She should not be handicapped in expressing her ideas by the lack of command in the English language. One may be intelligent and able to speak English well. But one should not be considered dumb for inability to speak English even though one's ideas may be outstanding.
Unfortunately this lovely girl was so fixated with her English grammar that we will never know what she would have answered if she understood the question and answered it in Tagalog—-or better still in Boholano or Waray ๐
Tina
Hi Feyma,
Dr. Long beat me to the punch! I was going to write a similar comment to his. This young girl, like Dr. Long mentioned, should have answered the question in a Filipino language she is comfortable with. That would have earned her points with the nationalists and would make her stand out in the international competition as a true representative of her country, language and all! After all, she will be representing the Philippines, not USA or England!
I just hope the pageant organizers and her coach, who are grooming her for the international competition, won't focus on her English skills but will, instead, give her pointers on how to answer difficult questions in her national language!
That said, I'm not sure if she has the maturity to handle tough competitions like these. I agree with you, Feyma, maybe she should have waited a couple of years. I feel bad for her as she will be remembered for this embarrassing moment for years to come. I hope she can put it all behind her and not let it get her down.

Hi Feyma,
Ditto to Dr. Long and Tina. I'm sure a few of us has been in a somewhat embarassing situation in a lesser degree. Unfortunately, her experience was in front of millions of people, but that does not mean she's lacking intelligence. She does need some encouragement to practice speaking the english language for her own good – social or business later in life.

Q & A is only 10% of the entire cirteria for judging. She won two special awards (best in gown and best in swimsuit) so if her score in Q & A. let say 2%, and got perfect score in some other criteria for judging, that would still make her total score uplifted.

hi Feyma–i do not follow beauty contest –but in my unlearned and humble opinion i was very proud of her to repesent the phills–she stumbled but did not lose composure–i think she will repesent the phills with dignity

janina, is not deserving to win for that particular pageant. it was humuliating. i can't believe she won.( not unless if it is predetermined) beauty contest is not just for beauty but also for brains. being 17 years old is not a reason that is it your first time to join the contest. – what if she will be sent abroad for another contest? maging kulelat naman ang pilipinas hanggang miss photogenic na lang ba tayo? she know better than that. ๐
Dr. Sponk Long
Since, my earlier post I watched some of her interviews and she answers questions with brilliance. She answers them in Tagalog of course. Ask her to answer in English and she answers only in one sentence. She obviously tries to avoid talking in English.
This is a an intelligent girl. She should not attempt to answer in English though. If she just relax and be herself she'll represent the country just fine.
I agree with post #19…Janina didn't buckle…that's something.
Shirley
I think the problem was language. This girl has not learned proper English grammar. Sana nag-aral muna ng tamang English bago sumali. Paano ba siya napasali sa contest na ito? Young age and first experience on the contest cannot be blamed for her lack of English language fluency. When I was in school, English was high on the list of things to learn. I know that nowadays, most students do not have this priority anymore. Why? Was it because of the campaign for patriotism that threw English to the background? English remains the dominant international language and every Filipino should be fluent in this language.
Feyma
Hi Shirley – I know what you feel. It is really shocking to me for her to win the contest to even represents the Philippines. I know we were taught English language at an early age. Maybe some school don't really impose on the students to speak English.
Anyway, everybody's shocked that she won, and even the contestant herself can't believed that she won the contest.
