This could be a big week for the Philippines. Well, I suppose that either way it will be a big week. Let’s see what I am talking about here.
Back on January 1, I made my Philippine Predictions for 2013. One of my predictions was a real wild one, but I made the prediction nonetheless. I said that in 2013 there would be a new Pope, and that that new Pope would be Filipino. A lot of people kind of laughed at that one, or scoffed. I, and other readers got quite a shock when, in early February, Pope Benedict XVI announced that he would be resigning his post. What a shocker that was, given that I had predicted it a little more than a month prior to his resignation!
Shortly after Pope Benedict announced his resignation, I revisited the topic in my post, Tagle Time?
Now, it has been announced that the conclave of Cardinals will begin on this coming Tuesday, March 12 at the Vatican.
Why will it be a big week for the Philippines? Well, because in recent weeks, speculation has been becoming rampant that Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, a Filipino Cardinal, has a possibility of being selected as the next Pope! Selected or not, this coming week the Philippines will be electrified by the chance of such an event happening!
Did you know that a Filipino has even come up with a jingle to promote Cardinal Tagle to become the next Pope?
Kind of funny, don’t you think?
If recent history is followed, it is likely that we may know the identity of the new Pope by the end of this week. Yes, it could also take longer, but over the past 100 years, these conclaves have resulted in a selection of the new Pope within a few days.
What do you think? Will it be Tagle? What will be the reaction of the Philippines if the new Pope is Filipino?

Never know, anything is possible these days 🙂

According to St. Malachy the last pope will be Peter the Roman. This has been 100% correct for the last 800 years. Theres an African pope named Peter.
Jim Hannah
I’m a tad confused though…to be Roman he’d need to be Italian?
Bob Martin
We shall see, James! I am hoping that it happens, would be a good thing for the Philippines.
Bob Martin
Thanks, Thanks, Gaddy Gose.
Bob Martin
African is not Roman, Ronin Wolf, so I guess it won’t be 100% accurate anymore! 😉
John Pearson
I DON’T UNDERSTAND! WHAT HAPPENED IN POLAND?
Bob Martin
Poland was the home of Pope John Paul II. He was raised from obscurity and became the Pope. Being Pope, he uplifted Poland, much as what Tagle would do for the Philippines in my opinion.
John Pearson
OK! THANK YOU.
Bob Martin
No prob…
Gary Beebe
I have to disagree. My opinion is there is enough of that false faith as it is. Not debating a religion but when 3/4 or more of a Country I love follows a MAN. IE: Pope then i do protest. Feel free to blast me if you like and would be happy to put one word out there. Typically it says it all. JESUS!!! God bless folks.
Bob Martin
Gary Beebe – Why would you suggest that I would bash you for sharing your opinion? I have never bashed you before, don’t you think it is a bit unfair to suggest that I would do so now?
Gary Beebe
Never suggested you sir. Just that anytime I bring up the subject. I get hammered. I do not look forward to it only prepare myself. I enjoy most of the stories posted about the Philippines you post.

Is black cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana “Peter the Roman” that St Malachy prophesized?
St. Malachy prophesized that the final pope would be “Peter the Roman”, which is interesting because no pope to date has chosen the name of Peter out of respect for Peter the Apostle. There has also been speculation that the final pope would be black. Even more curiously, there is a black cardinal in Ghana, Peter Turkson, who is believed to be a frontrunner and whose name has come up in previous discussions of papal appointment.
Cardinal Turkson has said in the past that “if God would wish to see a black man also as pope, thanks be to God.” Catholic Church chronicler Rocco Palmo has called Turkson the lone Scripture scholar in the Pope’s “Senate”, and believes that his status as a potential “papabile” has been elevated due to his 2009 appointment as spokesman for the Second Synod for Africa.
Outside of the Church, there are also many who believe that Turkson is the favorite to take over as pontiff. Even the London bookmakers believe he’s the top choice. Odds comparison site Oddschecker.com lists Turkson at best price odds of 4/1, and as short as 2/1 with some firms. Francis Arinze, the Nigerian Cardinal, is also a huge favorite with the bookies.

All the other popes in the prophocy have been 100% correct. Guess will wait and see. With Easter coming they have to choose very soon
Bob Martin
According to Wikipedia, which may or may not be accurate, Malachy’s predictions were accurate up until 1590, but very inaccurate after that.
Gary Beebe
The alleged prophecies were first published by Benedictine monk Arnold de Wyon in 1595. Wyon attributes the prophecies to Saint Malachy, a 12th‑century Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland.
Given the very accurate description of popes up to 1590 and lack of accuracy after that year, Catholic historians generally conclude that the alleged prophecies are a fabrication written shortly before they were published. The Roman Catholic Church also dismisses them as forgery.[1][2] The prophecies may have been created in an attempt to suggest that Cardinal Girolamo Simoncelli’s bid for the papacy in the second conclave of 1590 was divinely ordained.
Gary Beebe
Your correct Bob. Nice job on the research. Will becoming to follow up with a ministry I started in the Philippines in October of this year. Hope to stop by and meet you.
Gary
That would be great… The big problem right now is all the problems they are finding with all the others. Tagel seems to be the only one with a clean record. The last Pope will be unable to leave because he might be jailed. Very sad…
MindanaoBob
No comment.. ha ha… I don’t think Tagle is the only Cardinal with a clean record. Some are soiled without a doubt, but only a minority in my view.
Ronin Wolf
I’m not catholic just passing on what I read online. I look for Christ to come not the pope
Gary Beebe
Amen brother and God bless!
donna west
He looks like a good man and if he becomes Pope the Catholic filipinos should feel much hope and peace in their hearts. Oh no, now that jingle is stuck in my head. Gee thanks, Bob. HeHe
MindanaoBob
Ha ha… sorry to put you through the misery, Donna! I hate it when a tune gets stuck on replay in my head like that!
John Bedaure
It is very very extremely difficult for a Filipino to be elected as Pope, since this is a European institution of power and global control amongst the ruling houses, from Spain, Italy, Germany & France. To stop the fulfillment of the so-called St. Malachy Prophecy, they better elect a Filipino Pope! But of course, the Philippines is a Roman Catholic country because of this man. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXowMf9PZDI
Bob Martin
So far, I believe, only Europeans have been Pope. I don’t believe any Pope has ever come from any other region. But, there is now a lot of clamor for a Pope from the 3rd World, from Asia, Africa or Latin America. This could be the time for it. Those are the regions where the Church is growing.
John Bedaure
Unbelievable information here, Bob, that before the digital age is not available to anyone but the equation has changed. http://worldtruth.tv/the-trinity-of-global-empire-2/
John Reyes
And I suppose the former crack-sniffing mayor of Washington, D.C. knew that he was an important figure in this global trinity? I would say that Washington, D.C. would be the center of politics, not military. The brain of the U.S. military is not even geographically located in D.C. It is in the state of Virginia. Unbelievable is right. These are all a bunch of coincidences to me. Anyone with plenty of time in his hands can find coincidences all over the world, tie them all together convincingly, and come up with bull. LOL
Lenny
cool prediction………….really cool…………
MindanaoBob
Thanks Lenny. I have to admit it was a real good one!
Rey
Bob, if you’d ever come out right on this one, please send me a private message with 6 random numbers you can think of in the range of 1 to 55. 😀
MindanaoBob
Hi Rey – If so, I’ll have to charge you a fee for those numbers! 😉 You can certainly cover it, though!
Rey
No problem Bob, i’ll put it in mind once we meet for coffee it’s going to be on my tab. 😉
But whoever becomes Pope, i’m still going to treat you for coffee someday. 🙂
MindanaoBob
That would be great, my friend. I will be looking forward to it.
sugar
Hi Bob – Yep, Cardinal Tagle’s name been prominent even in some media outlets. I read few weeks back a blog post (from National Review Online) like Cardinal is a favored one ’cause of young age and charisma. But I was watching news and reporter mentioned that there was this poll in which a Cardinal from the US (‘O Malley?) topped. But a Pope from the US? err, he he. Filipino Pope seems to be much better..uhm…:)
MindanaoBob
Hi Sugar. Probably the poll was of Americans, that is why they want an American Pope. Personally, I don’t see that happening. 🙂
Tom N
I saw the same thing that Sugar saw, but in a couple of different places. That being said, I would be surprised if it ended up being an American. There are too many people around the world who, for whatever reasons, think the U.S. already has too much power. When you toss in recent controversies, it makes it hard to imagine that outcome.
MindanaoBob
Hi Tom – Nice to hear from you, my friend. I have heard mention in the US media of US Cardinals, particularly Dolan. Problem is, no matter what most Americans thing, Americans are not loved in the rest of the world, and I just don’t see an American being made Pope. Stranger things have happened, I suppose, but I just don’t see it in the cards. I think we are in agreement there. The recent controversies are also a big reason.
big p
An amazing prediction Bob–hope the whole thing comes true.
MindanaoBob
Ha ha, thanks big p.
taglejingle
If the online world will have a say in the upcoming conclave…then Tagle will be the winner! I’m still going LSS with the chorus “Our next pope should be cardinal tagle, our next pope should be cardinal tagle eh” Love Cardinal Tagle’s Campaign Jingle.. 🙂
MindanaoBob
Yes, it is a catchy jingle, no doubt!
Anne
Hi Bob,
wish your prediction comes true, it is a proud of the Philippine if Cardinal Tagle become
Papa, my ancestors are solid catholic were never been change our religion since since
up to this generation. but in my personal views and hope i was wrong, i think this is not
yet the time to cardinal tagle become a pope. but i wish and pray that cardinal tagle is a
chosen one.
MindanaoBob
Only time will tell, Anne! Cardinal Tagle is getting a lot of support thrown his way, though.
Bob New York
I don’t care to comment on Religion or Politics but I can not help to comment on that fantastic video ! The video would be enough to sell me on who should be the next Pope.
I always said your information has a high degree of accuracy Bob.
Thanks for posting that video it could very well become a Classic !
MindanaoBob
I thought you would enjoy that video, Bob! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Axel Carin
A Filipino as Pope? I understand that the people here would love it, but i’m also afraid that it could give the Filipine Chatolic church much more political power. Specially in these days, where there’s taken steps to help the poorest. The RH bill. It could get a set back, which would be a pity
MindanaoBob
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Axel.
Mars
Hi Bob, it’s a long shot for Cardinal Tagle but he sure is getting some mentioned in air time here on Fox News and CNN today, so it could be the year!
Regards,
Mars
MindanaoBob
Hi Mars – Nice to hear from you, it’s been a while! I hope you are doing well.
Personally, I think that Tagle’s chances are as good as any other candidate. I have heard of no other Cardinal getting more press on this than him. I would agree that he is a longshot, but I also think that every candidate is a longshot!
Mars
Hi Bob, doing just fine. Between traveling down south and trying to be a Pappy to a two year old girl and a 7-month boy, life,s great. Thanks.
Every time they mention Tagle’s name it’s always about his youthfulness and his likability. The US Cardinal is being mentioned here too.
Mars
MindanaoBob
Hi Mars – Sounds like you are living life to it’s fullest, congrats on that! Keep enjoying yourself!
Mars
Thanks Bob, “if I had known grandchildren are this fun, I would have had them first! ” Sorry, I couldn’t resist it-from one of the bumper stickers. Besides, you can always hand them back to their mom/dad anytime you want.
Paul Thompson
Hi Bob;
As a Catholic I’ve sent in my absentee ballot, albeit that didn’t help much last November, It never dawned on me what a young looking man he is. So my vote is for him, because I liked his jingle! We’ll find out this week…
MindanaoBob
Hi Paul – I am a former Catholic. I called the Vatican Voter Hotline and they said I could not vote in this year’s Pope election! 😉
Mars
Ha ha Bob, you mean you cannot vote Chicago-style? Vote early-Vote often?
MindanaoBob
Bawal…
Dirk
Well yesterday on the Today show, he is considered to be a front runner one out of 5. The biggest reasons, no sex scandals, his age, his location to Asia and most important they think he can connect with the youth. I think he has a great shot and it would be very well deserved….
MindanaoBob
I too think he would be a great Pope, Dirk! It would certainly be a big deal in the Philippines if it happens!
taglejinglemaker
Thanks a lot for supporting Cardinal Tagle, Mindanao Bob. Thanks a lot too for sharing his Campaign Jingle. It’s really cool and something new! I’m sharing it with my friends now. 🙂
MindanaoBob
Hi taglejinglemaker – Are you the one who made the jingle? If so, great job! I am pulling for Tagle to be the next Pope! Should know within a few days or so, most likely.
taglejinglemaker
Yes, i’m the one who made it. Thanks a lot for the support. 🙂 Yup, we should know in a few days if our man made it to the top. As of now, they’re saying no one got elected yet. 🙂
Melody
We strongly pray it will be Cardinal Tagle!
I love the jingle and especially that it was made by my cousin! 🙂
MindanaoBob
That’s great, Melody! It’s an exciting time in the Philippines, hopefully we will know soon!
John Reyes
Melody, I have a question for your cousin who made the “Taglejingle” regarding copyright. Although the lyrics of the jingle are not the same, the tune is copied from the popular song, “YMCA”, which had been recorded in 1978 by the Village People with the song’s writer, Victor Willis, as the lead singer. Willis and his partners granted the copyright to the song to music publishers in that year. However, the amendment to the Copyright Act of 1978 gives the original copyright holder the option of recapturing his copyright after 35 years. Willis did exercise that option through the courts and is now in year 2013 once again the copyright holder of the YMCA song. The question in my mind is, what is the copyright implication when a tune is, but not the lyrics are, copied from a copyrighted song?
MindanaoBob
Sorry, but I would advise Melody to not answer this question.. if there are legal implications, she could incriminate herself or her cousin by answering. Sorry, John.
PapaDuck
Bob,
There are some female groups making noise about a female should be pope in the future. I don’t think we will see that in my lifetime. Have a nice day
MindanaoBob
Ha ha.. since the Catholics don’t even allow women to be Priests, I’m pretty sure your prediction is right on the mark, PapaDuck! 😆
John Reyes
Papa Duck, since the Tagalog word for Pope is “Papa”, I wonder how Filipinos would maneuver around the title without sounding awkward if a female pope were to be elected someday. Would they call her Papa Maria Christina, or whatever her given name is, or would they call her Mama Maria Christina, I wonder. LOL
July is fast coming up, short-timer. You all packed yet? By the time you leave the States, the Missus and I will just be returning from our two-week vacation in Yucatan, Mexico, in Tulum this time around. I know how you must feel, and I envy you big time. 🙂
John Reyes
No problem, Bob.
Mars
Well, Cardinal Tagle will just to wait his turn. They voted for Cardinal Bergoglio from Argentina-Pope Francis 1.
MindanaoBob
Yes, it was fun to watch, and hope for Tagle. But, it was not to be. He is still young and there is a good chance he will be Pope someday, I think.
