Last week, I was watching a show on a TV news channel, ANC. ANC is sort of the CNN of the Philippines. Sometimes their shows are not so great, but most times I find their conversations interesting and informative. I seem to learn a little about the Philippines whenver I watch, and I like that.
Last week they were having a talk show, I don’t recall the name, but they were talking about a recent survey that had been done in countries all over the world. I guess there must have been 20 or 25 different countries that were included in the survey.
One of the questions that was widely discussed on the show was this: “Do you feel that the United States has gone too far in playing the World’s Policeman in recent years?” Now, this should be interesting, I thought. For most countries, they agreed strongly that the USA had gone overboard in that role. Many countries had about 70% to 75% agreement that the USA had gone too far. Even people in the USA gave a result of 75% saying that their own country had gone too far, and should not try to police the world to the extent that they do. You know, Americans have a long history of wishing to be isolationist. Remember World War 2, even while most of the world was fighting, the American people did not want to get involved, until Pearl Harbor.
Now, it was interesting when they revealed the results of the survey in the Philippines. Only 30% of Filipinos felt that the USA had gone too far. Some 70% of Filipinos were happy with the role that the USA is taking in world affairs. Only one country, Poland, took a stronger pro USA stance in the results.
I found this survey to be very interesting. I knew that in the past, a lot of Filipinos strongly supported the USA, but I felt that those days were passing, and there is a faction that is growing that is genuinely against the USA. But, based on the survey, it would seem that the Philippines is still strongly in the USA column.

Bob,
I saw a similar result on a BBC current affairs show a couple of years ago. I put it down to one thing…….NBA.

Hi Laurence – While the Filipinos love basketball, I don't think the survey results had anything to do with the NBA. Many Filipinos, especially of the older generation have a deep love of America, stemming from it's days as the Colonial occupier of the Philippines. I see that changing in many of the younger people, but it is still quite prevalent.

Opinion through the world has leant towards being anti American, since vietnam really, a lot of the actions America takes on world current events is interpreted through the world as being self serving only, this is a shame but sometimes words and actions by some American poloticians make this perception worse….
anyway, i am glad to hear this anti American bias is not represented in the Philippines, like you i have always found Philippine people to be even handed and fair in their views, of course they are also a little sceptical about their own leaders
enough from me
Bob
Hi Rick – Yes, I agree…. 100%
