I get a lot of e-mails, almost daily e-mails, from foreigners who want to know if they can find a job in the Philippines. The fact is, you probably can’t find a job in the Philippines.
Some people try, though. Take a look at the video below and see about these two Americans who tried to be entrepreneurial and make their own jobs in the Philippines! They decided to try driving a Jeepney to see if that would help them pay the bills.
Do you think they succeeded? Watch the video and see what happened.
Looks like they got a few passengers there! But, at P8 per passenger, I don’t think it fed them for too long, and while it may have been fun for them, it probably would be pretty hard work doing this for the long run.
You can make it in the Philippines
If you want to move to the Philippines and don’t want to resort to driving a Jeepney, why not check out my eBook, 49 Ways to make a living in the Philippines?
If you are interested in living in the Philippines, but you need a source of income, getting a job here is generally not the way to go. Firstly, most companies are not looking to hire foreigners. Secondly, you probably won’t want to work for the kind of wages offered here, usually only a few dollars per day.
To help out people like you, I have written a eBook called “49 Ways to earn a living in the Philippines” and I cover ideas of all sorts on how you can earn a good living while living in the Philippines. I have been earning my living here since 2000, and I earn more money now than when I lived in the States. So, I know that I can help you do that too!
As a special offer to you, I am going to offer you $10 off the eBook, but the offer is good for only the next 24 hours. During checkout, just enter the coupon code – 10discountToday – and the eBook will be $10 off the regular price. But, remember, the discount expires after 24 hours.
That could be unique but it also could be danger, if we look on the negative side. Americans deserved to live and work in our country too, don’t you think so? Give and take, I guess, LOL!

Hi BinaSonia, I kind of answer that question in the article. Were you able to read the article?

I think jobs are pretty easy to find in Philippines, once you have the Permanent Resident status or a status making it legal to work. I am licenced to sell Life Insurance and started to sell for Axa, but then quit. Now I’m teaching English Classes. I don’t really want the job for the money, I needed something in my life to do.

LOL, the vid is cute. I’ve seen these guys try several things.
Yup, there are plenty of Koreans going in the country to learn english and tour around
Hello Mike – when I am talking about teaching English to Koreans, I am talking about teaching online to people who are actually in Korea. I believe there is a lot more money to be made that way. That would be my choice.
Bob, you’re right… also if you are an engineer or architect, you could do outsource projects for foreign companies or be a consultant for local companies
That is true, Mike!

Hi Kenneth, good morning. Not hard to find some work, the key is finding something that pays good though.

I have friends that work at call-centers that earn a little more than the average pay in Philippines.

To me that would not be worth giving up my time for. 🙂

Ha ha. I don’t know, these days it is so very easy to make money, I see no reason why people would give up big chunks of time for a small amount of money.

I needed money to buy some coffee at Starbucks.
Hey Kenneth,
If getting money to buy a cup of coffee at STARBUCK is what you want; let me know. I can treat you to a cup if you are in MetroManila, Cavite, or General Santos, Mindanao.
I travel extensively every month making businesses for my clients.
Jonathan
Congratulations, Jonathan. For the life of me I can’t understand why other Expats will work for peanuts.

Ha ha. If you set up business on the internet you can be making money while you are drinking your coffee.
Hi Bob, that is absolutely true, some would even do their work at coffee shops where they can avail the wifi while sipping their coffee. Online jobs are quiet flexible.
Hi Anne – You sure are right! I am not even talking about online jobs. I am talking about simple things like operating a website just like this one. You can make a lot of money doing that!

I probably should do that as a second job, since I sit in front of my computer most or the time anyway.

If your a foreigner residing here in the Philippines and had other means of support to sustain you and your family’s daily needs (i,e, Pension, SSS etc,,) then there is a possibility you could find something to kill time. But, If you needed a job to support yourself, your chances of finding a job here in the Philippines is Slim to none (and Slim just left the building). All you need to do is look at the employment stats here, high unemployment rate, over 10% of the counties population is working abroad and i cant forget to mention the blatant practice here of age discrimination.

I don’t understand. I’ve been offered jobs that I’ve turned down. I just want a job for life fullfillment, not the money so much. I’m earning higher that the average wage here.

I am sorry, David, I have to totally disagree with you on this. If you are talking about a traditional job, yes, you are 100% correct. If you are talking about 21st century ways of making money, it is very easy to do in the Philippines. I moved to the Philippines at age 38. I have no Social Security. I have no pension. I have the money that I earn for myself, and I earn a lot more money now than I ever did when I lived in the States. It can be done.
You are right, Bob. This is the place to make money without trying if you don’t look at it the traditional way. I mean ” don’t try to look for a job”. The average salary is much lower than in the States. One needs to create jobs and make money from that. Let the others ( locals) do the works. I have been here for almost 13 years and I can say that I have amassed more than a million U.S. “bananas” without working. I guess I am no longer in the same boat as most ex-pats. My circle of friends and contacts are in the top 20% . Good luck to you all. Jonathan

Hi Kenneth Crawley – it is not hard to understand. If you have a few websites and build their popularity you can make really good money. Even if you are sitting at Starbucks sipping on a cup of coffee, you are still earning money while just sitting there.

Bob, i am aware being self employed here in Manila of the potential of making money, i was referring to Ken’s comment, waking in off the street and finding what you call a traditional job.

Ah, you didn’t specify who you were talking to. Since I was the original poster here, I assumed that you were talking to me, David Stephens.

It’s easy to find a sales job. Americans selling to Americans. I have my insurance licence and could do that here. Selling condos to Americans would also be an easy one. Call Centers would grab people from English speaking countries. The list is endless. If doing an investment, it only takes looking around at what sells well where you come from, that’s not here. That list is endless too. Bob has a super idea. The only people who arent working, are people that don’t have the paperwork (13A), or those that don’t want to work.

Oh! I even forgot to mention the job teaching English for Daum Korean School that I’m doing right now.
Hi Ken – Koreans are into tongue surgery to help them improve their enunciation of certain English words. See: http://www.asianplasticsurgeryguide.com/anime/1106_korean-tongue-surgery.html
For this reason, I would think that most Koreans would prefer classroom teaching of the English language by a native speaker over online teaching, not only for the grammar but for “accent-free” pronunciation as well. Good to hear that you are able to find employment in the Philippines as an English teacher.
Tens of thousands of Koreans learn English online every day. The market is huge.
Oh! I even forgot to mention the job teaching English for Daum Korean School that I’m doing right now.
I think jobs are easier to get here in Philippines, than they are in the U.S., but the pay is low by American standards. It is between American standards and higher than Filipine standards.

But why work for sub par wages when you don’t have to?
The videos were fun, especially the meriKanos driving the Jeep.
Hi Boss, glad you enjoyed the video, I did too.
But why work for sub par wages when you don’t have to?
hello bob! ive been reading and visiting your website for almost 10months daily, and i really enjoy it, theres an expat residing in our place , i think he doesnt have a job, but he has a small sari sari store, and owns probably 4 or 5 pedicab tricycles which are rented by locals, and pays him a daily dues
Hi Daniel, thank you for visiting my site regularly, I appreciate that very much. I hope the Expat living near you is able to do okay with the resources he has. Have you met him before?
I see the guy almost everyday, I never knew he s in to pedicab kinda business, until one day, he confronted a pedicab driver for failure to remit a couple of days payment of his pedicab dues, he grab his pedicab and brought it to his house and the next day a piece of cardboard hangs in his pedicab that says wanted: pedicab driver, after a few days his pedicab has a driver again ironically, it’s the same guy who he kick out for not paying, some kinda settlement have happened between them,.
Ha ha, Daniel, it sounds like he keeps a tight grip on his pedicabs! I know that you have to do that… I used to own 8 tricycles.
Hi Bob great article as usual! I would like to play Devil’s advocate with you on this one. If I asked LeBron James how to make millions he might say, “Learn how to throw an orange ball through an orange hoop ten feet above the ground.” If I ask Adele the same question, she might say, “Sing about all the men who have done you wrong.”
My point is what works for LeBron James or Adele or Mindinao Bob will not work for everyone. You have to have a skill set that matches your ambition. Bob, I am just saying that you have certain skills that not everyone has.
Hi Jay – I understand what you are saying, and you are right in many ways. But, consider these things:
– If you asked LeBron to tell you 49 different ways to make a million dollars, he might have one or two that fit your skill set.
– Same for Adele, ask her for 49 different ways, and she would surely need to give more than just singing about men who have caused her problems.
On top of that, I offer a 100% no questions asked refund, so if you find that the ideas I share with you don’t fit your skill set, you get the money back AND still get to keep the book! How can you go wrong? 🙂
Bob,
Really enjoyed the video. I bought your 49 ways ebook. Has a lot of great business info in it. Well worth the money. My fiancé Anne does great with her business. She might put an average of a few hours a day into it and not everyday either. She has a good client base right now. But she really hasn’t scratched the surface as to what it could be. She’s very good at sales and talking to people. Yes she’s Filipino, but anyone could do what she does. Just have to find he right niche. Take care.
Hi PapaDuck – Yeah, that is a good video! Watch here the next couple of Sundays to see more!
