Since building the house for our turtles, we cleared out the other part of the front yard. Before the clearing, I had lots of plants there in front, it is just across from our front porch. After building the turtleville and seeing the empty space next to the turtle kingdom, Bob and I decided we will be putting up a small nipa hut soon. We want that it will go together with our native products theme. So we decided that we will be going to put up nipa hut or nipa hut gazebo. I am a big fan of any nice gazebo looking structure. Ha ha ha… I want our gazebo to be easily taken out too whenever it is time for us to move.

You probably wonder why on earth we want a nipa hut near the turtle kingdom? Really we just like to see what the turtles are up to. Every morning Chris likes to hang out there at the turtleville with our dogs, while watching people passing by. It might be a fun project for Jhun Jhun to make. We will see if it would  be cheaper for Jhun Jhun to build or just buy the already built one and just assemble it in our yard. Me and my niece Glenda went to see the price of the already made ones. I’m surprised, it’s not too bad. It’s around P14k for the 6 feet base structure. I told them if I need to change something would that make the price higher? They said no because the changes is just for the sitting part anyway. Also I want them to add a door that will open/close to the entry of the hut because I don’t want the dogs to stay there and maybe ruin the inside of the hut. They told me they will do it at the same price. So that makes me happy. 🙂

I think it will be a good project for us. It’s really a good place for us to lounge around during the day. When we told the kids of our plan, man they’re all excited over it. They’re even asking me when is that project going to happen? I have to think it over and talk with Jhun Jhun.  My only thing if we have him over to build, Bob and I will might have so much changes that at the end it might cost more than buying the already built one. It’s already our track records when Jhun Jhun comes here we have so much project for him to do. So much too for us to consider.  🙂

I know for sure the kids will hang out there a lot. I’m also sure that my teenage kids will have their friends over and just lounge around there. Which is okay for us as long as they maintain the cleanliness. Aaron might have his band mates play their drums and other instrument in our yard. Hmmm, it will end up with a small party on our front when the teenagers come over. Will it’s okay, Bob and I like the friends of our kids that come here anyway. So that should not be a problem. We will see what happens. Will give you update later folks!

  3. Go for it Feym…it looked like a nice project..I am curious as to the green roof – what is is made of? Not sure if I told you about my grandson. I am now legal guardian..he is 8. He would love this kind of project…ibog ko ninyo….

    • Hi Perla – Thank you. That green, its the fish net. To avoid birds from going inside the roof. It gets damage easy without it. Hey, really good project for you and your little one. Make one when you retire here. If I remember you had a nice house in Camiguin, right?

I was born in a real nipa hut, not a gazebo ‘nipa hut’, a little bigger than the standard ones, we had 2 small bedrooms, hopefully soon i will be able to live in one again (this time with a cement footers or foundation and close to the beach). Good luck Feyma, I’m sure it’s going to be a nice one and you and your family will spend a lot of fun times in it.

    • HI Toti – I know what nipa hut you’re referring to. We have those on some of my parents land. I like those hut. It’s nice to rest after hours of working in the fields.

  8. I don’t mean to be a downer but just a warning on turtles. I used to keep many snakes and lizards as pets. Reptiles, including turtles, carry the Salmonella bacteria. So wash your hands after touching turtles or other reptiles. This is usually not a problem for adults because an adult is probably not going to stick their hands in their mouths after touching a reptile. However, children, especially small children, are a different story.

    • Hi Gary – Don’t worry we had the turtles for over a decade now and seems everyone is okay. Nobody’s sick so far. Thank god for that. Honestly we already know that handling them, had to wash hands afterwards. Everyone in the house already know that when they come in the house from outside working or playing they had to wash their hands with soap. My kids knows that already. But thanks for the reminder though.

  9. Great Idea to build a Nipa hut Feyma. My G.F.’s Lola had one built at the family house in the province a couple of years ago with concrete supports and a small concrete slab on the entrance side, and now it’s the favorite place for everyone to sit and talk in the evening.

    I am hoping to find a house that already has one when we rent, as a nice place to hang out at night for relaxing and hanging out with friends and family. I’d love to see pictures of the construction as it takes place too!! If we can’t find one with it, I would have one built that we could move to whatever location we move to, when that becomes necessary, or desired. I like the idea of a mobile hut. 🙂

    • Hi Scott Fortune – That should not be a problem. I’ve seen some for rent houses here that already had a nipa hut on their yard. Sure I will post when we will build ours for you guys to see.

    • Hi Frank – If you want to use the term bamboo shed its okay. Most foreigners used the term nipa hut. Does it really matter? Whatever term people want to call it (nipat hut or bamboo shed or bahay kubo), its okay. Nipa hut because the materials being use is nipa. Mostly on the roof.

    Looks like a good job building the Nipa Hut. You could put a small gas grill next to your cooler so you can have a cookout while watching the turtles.

    • Hi Jay – Thank you! Don’t have that much lizards inside our house, our cats will just kill them. Not good to see after. We have 2 turtles. I can’t remember the kind that we have. It wast told to us when we bought them. Forgot already. Ha ha ha… Sign of aging. LOL.
